Abstract: In general, this disclosure describes techniques for a containerized router operating within a cloud native orchestration framework. In an example, a computing device comprises a containerized routing protocol process executing on processing circuitry of the computing device and configured to receive routing information; a containerized set of workloads; a data plane development kit (DPDK)-based virtual router executing on the processing circuitry and configured to forward traffic to and from the workloads based on the routing information from the containerized routing protocol; and a virtual router agent for the virtual router, the virtual router agent executing on the processing circuitry and configured to expose a generic data plane interface.

Abstract: In an example, a method includes processing, by an application programming interface (API) server implemented by a configuration node of a network controller for a software-defined networking (SDN) architecture system, requests for operations on native resources of a container orchestration system; processing, by a custom API server implemented by the configuration node, requests for operations on custom resources for SDN architecture configuration, wherein each of the custom resources for SDN architecture configuration corresponds to a type of configuration object in the SDN architecture system; detecting, by a control node of the network controller, an event on an instance of a first custom resource of the custom resources; and by the control node, in response to detecting the event on the instance of the first custom resource, obtaining configuration data for the instance of the first custom resource and configuring a corresponding instance of a configuration object in the SDN architecture.

Abstract: Techniques are described in which a centralized controller, such as a software defined networking (SDN) controller, constructs a service chain that includes a physical network function (PNF) between a bare metal server (BMS) and a virtual execution element (e.g., virtual machine or container), or in some instances a remote BMS, or vice-versa. In accordance with the techniques disclosed herein, the controller may construct an inter-network service chain that includes PNFs, or a combination of PNFs and virtualized network functions (VNFs). The controller may construct an inter-network service chain to steer traffic between a BMS and a virtual execution element or remote BMS through an inter-network service chain using Virtual Extensible Local Area Network (VXLAN) as an underlying transport technology through the service chain.

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for a computing system comprising processing circuitry having access to a storage device, the processing circuitry configured to: generate, by a network controller executing in a software defined network (SDN), an advertisement in a first network cluster executing within a container orchestration platform of the SDN, wherein the advertisement conforms to a routing protocol and comprises information identifying a network service executing in the first network cluster, wherein the network service exposes a backend of a network application to the container orchestration platform of the SDN; and broadcast, by the network controller and to a second network cluster executing within the container orchestration platform of the SDN, the advertisement in accordance with the routing protocol.
