The method of the present invention provides a magnetoresistance effect element, which is capable of having a high MR ratio, corresponding to high density recording and being suitably applied to a magnetoresistance device even though a barrier layer is thinned to reduce resistance of the magnetoresistance effect element. The method of producing the magnetoresistance effect element, which includes the barrier layer composed of an oxidized metal, a first magnetic layer contacting one of surfaces of the barrier layer and a second magnetic layer contacting the other surface thereof, comprises the steps of: laminating the barrier layer on the first magnetic layer with using a target composed of the oxidized metal; and laminating the second magnetic layer on the barrier layer. The barrier layer is annealed before laminating the second magnetic layer thereon.

A double head supporting mechanism for a magnetic disk drive including an arm body and a carriage. The arm body includes an upper arm and a lower arm which are supported at their rear ends in a mutually rotatable manner. Both arms support an upper head and a lower head, respectively. Both of these heads hold a magnetic disk from both sides, at a mutually facing position, by having the magnetic disk inserted between them. The carriage is able to make reciprocal movement along the direction of the disk diameter. The arm body is held on its rear end side by the carriage in such a manner that it can swing freely by means of a common supporting spring. Both heads are constructed with a design so that they can follow the vertical deviation of the magnetic disk caused during rotation of the disk. The carriage is provided with a stopper to stop the lower arm from moving excessively. One of the heads is fixed to one of the arms, while the other head is held by the other arm through a gimbal spring in an inclinable manner. The common supporting spring is disposed along nearly the same plane as that of the magnetic disk.

A magnetic recording head includes a read/write core and an erase core sandwiched and fixedly connected between a main slider and an auxiliary slider, a coil assembly having back bars closely attached to the respective cores which a read/write coil and an erase coil are wound around and fixed thereon, and a gimbal spring on which the main slider is fixed. The read/write coil and the erase coil are laterally arranged along in parallel with the gimbal spring, and the sliders, the cores and the coil assembly are respectively arranged on the one side of the gimbal spring.
