    摘要: Magnetic sensors with effectively shaped side shields and their fabrication processes are provided. One such sensor includes a substrate, a sensor stack disposed on the substrate and having a stripe height, where the sensor stack further includes a front edge disposed at an air bearing surface (ABS) of the magnetic sensor, a back edge opposite of the front edge, and two side edges, and a side shield adjacent to each of the two side edges of the sensor stack, each side shield having a side shield height defined as a distance from the ABS to a back edge of the side shields, where the side shield height is greater than the stripe height, and where substantially no residue from materials used to form the side shield are disposed at the back edge of the sensor stack.

    摘要: A magnetic slider for magnetic data recording constructed by a process that allows for careful control of seed layer and overcoat thickness. The slider is treated by a process that result in surface pits and scratches. A refill layer is used to fill in the pits and scratches, the refill layer being constructed of a material that does not include Si or carbon. An angled ion beam etching can be used to remove portions of the refill layer that extend outside of the pits and scratches. Then, a seed layer comprising Si and a protective layer comprising C are deposited over the surface. Because the refill layer does not contain either of Si or C, the thickness of the seed layer and carbon overcoat can be accurately measured and controlled, without the refill layer being mistaken for seed or overcoat material.

    摘要: A head slider for supporting a head over a magnetic disk in a hard disk drive, and a method of making the head slider are disclosed. The tail section of the head slider has a deep write hole that may improve the altitude performance of the head slider by minimizing fly height variations at high altitudes (i.e., altitudes above 3000 m) or in low atmospheric pressure environments. The write hole prevents the fly height from changing. Additionally, the write hole limits the amount of lubricant that will flow over the ABS.
