    Abstract: An apparatus for signal modulation in a point-to-multipoint optical network is configured to modulate a single-wavelength carrier wave before distribution towards optical receivers of a first type adapted for intensity detection and a second type adapted for optical field detection. The apparatus includes a first module configured to modulate the carrier wave by varying the intensity of the carrier wave to represent data intended for the first type of receivers, and by controlling the phase and/or polarization of the carrier wave during selected periods. The apparatus includes a second module configured to modulate the carrier wave by varying the phase and/or polarization of the carrier wave to represent data intended for the second type of receivers, and by varying the intensity of the carrier wave during selected periods.

    Abstract: A method is proposed for encoding DTUs (30) in a transmitter (111; 211) for further transmission to a receiver (212; 112). Communications from the transmitter to the receiver alternate between first time sub-frames (22; 24) comprising data symbols of a first type (D2; U2) having a first data payload capacity (NDSC,MIN), and second time sub-frames (21; 23) comprising data symbols of a second type (D1; U1) having a second data payload capacity (NDSC,MAX) greater than the first data payload capacity. The method comprises encoding individual DTUs into Q block-interleaved codewords (40) for protection against communication errors, Q denoting a positive integer value; obtaining scheduling information (txsch_info) as to the types of data symbols over which the encoded DTUs (50) are to be conveyed; and enabling or disabling the further block-interleaving of a group of M consecutive encoded DTUs (60) based on the scheduling information for the respective M consecutive encoded DTUs, M denoting a positive integer value greater than one.The present invention also relates to a transmitter (111; 211) for encoding DTUs according to the method, and to a receiver (112; 212) for decoding the so-encoded DTUs.

    Abstract: A multi-line digital transceiver configured to use low-complexity beamforming on at least some tones to boost effective SNR values for selected subscriber lines. In an example embodiment, the beamforming coefficients can be restricted to one-bit values or two-bit values, e.g., such that the corresponding beamforming computations can be implemented using only sign changes, swaps of the real and imaginary parts, and/or zeroing of some values, and without invoking any full-precision hardware multiplication operations. At least some embodiments can be run on a significantly simpler and/or less powerful vectoring engine than conventional beamforming solutions while still being able to provide nearly optimal beamforming SNR gains. In some embodiments, additional scaling by powers of two may be applied to at least some signals contributing to the beamforming, e.g., to satisfy power constraints for some or all of the subscriber lines.
