Abstract: This disclosure relates to a system and method configured to identify and, if necessary, respond to conditions indicative of electromagnetic brake temperature, and in particular relates to passenger conveyers, such as elevators, employing the system and method. More specifically, an example passenger conveyer system includes an electromagnetic brake and a controller configured to identify a condition indicative of a temperature of the electromagnetic brake approaching a boundary of a predetermined operating range.

Abstract: Disclosed is an elevator machine including: a plurality of stationary structures, including a proximate stationary structure and a distal stationary structure, a brake support that comprises the proximate stationary structure, a brake disc rotably supported in the brake support intermediate the plurality of stationary structures, the plurality of stationary structures and the brake disc each including a respective one of a plurality of orifices, and the plurality of orifices being mutually aligned and offset from a rotational axis of the brake disc to removably receive an elongated bar, wherein when the bar is positioned in the plurality of orifices, the brake disc is prevented from rotating, thereby preventing vertical movement of an elevator car in an elevator hoistway.

Abstract: An illustrative elevator system includes an elevator car, a machine including a motor that provides a motive force for moving the elevator car along a travel path and a brake that resists movement of the elevator car, and a brake controller. The brake controller is configured to determine when the elevator car is within a selected range of at least one end of the travel path. The brake controller inhibits a delay in application of the brake when the elevator car is within the selected range and permits a delay in application of the brake when the elevator car is outside of the selected range.
