944,944. Feeding webs. PACKAGE MACHINERY CO. Feb. 18, 1960 [Dec. 4, 1959], No. 5747/60. Heading B6B. [Also in Divisions B4, B5 and B8] In a packaging machine (see Division B8) in which a web W is formed into a tube advanced intermittently and sealed transversely at intervals above increments of material poured into the tube, by vertically reciprocating jaws 52, 54 (see Division B4), the web roll and web are braked on either side of take-up means for drawing lengths of web off the roll prior to its being advanced by the jaws. Web passes from identical rolls 30 to form a double thickness strip and each roll is capable of axial adjustment by engagement of a collar 592 on its shaft 550 with a member 594 on a hand screw 596. The roll brake drum 586 is contacted by a shoe 584 on a lever 572 pivoted at 574 and having secured to it at 570 a cam strip 568, Figs. 22, 23. The web passes round rollers 591 and 565, the latter being mounted on arms 564 pivoted at 562 and one bearing a roller 566. When the web is being fed by the take-up device, the arms 564 rise and the roller, engaging the strip 568, raises the lever 572 and thus the shoe 584 to release the roll 30. The double web travels round rollers 32, 34, 36, 38, Fig. 1, the roller 36 being vertically reciprocated to take up web by links 68 connecting it to the frame 54 on which are mounted the sealing jaws 52, 54. It then passes a photoelectric scanner 40, operative to ensure sealing of the tube in the correct position relative to printing on the web, and between a pair of non- rotatable braking rolls at 42, Figs. 1, 25. One roll 612 is fixed and the other 618 is mounted on arms 620 moved by a lever 628 and air motor 632 to clamp the web against the roll 612 when the web is being drawn from the rolls W by the roller 36. The web then passes over a roller 46 movable horizontally by adjusting screws to vary the angle at which the web approaches a folder 48 of the packaging machine.
