摘要: In one embodiment, the present invention is a method for allocation of finite computational resources amongst multiple entities, wherein the method is structured to optimize the business value of an enterprise providing computational services. One embodiment of the inventive method involves establishing, for each entity, a service level utility indicative of how much business value is obtained for a given level of computational system performance. The service-level utility for each entity is transformed into a corresponding resource-level utility indicative of how much business value may be obtained for a given set or amount of resources allocated to the entity. The resource-level utilities for each entity are aggregated, and new resource allocations are determined and executed based upon the resource-level utility information. The invention is thereby capable of making rapid allocation decisions, according to time-varying need or value of the resources by each of the entities.

摘要: An approach for transmitting packets over a shared communication channel is disclosed. A satellite terminal (ST) (103, 105, 107, 109) contains a processor that transmits a packet over a transmission slot of the channel using a contention protocol, such as persistent Aloha. The processor reserves an available transmission slot, which is maintained until expiration of a predetermined timeout period.

摘要: A bone resection device for use in resection of bone during joint replacement surgery comprises a cutting tool housing (4), and at least one cutting tool (6, 8) which is fastened to the housing so that it can be moved reversibly between a retracted position and an extended position, in which it extends further from the housing in the extended position than in the retracted position. The cutting tool housing is attached to an elongate shaft (2) at or towards one end, the shaft having a control region at its other end from which the resection device is controlled while the cutting tool housing is located in the vicinity of bone tissue which is to be resected. The resection device includes a device (12) for controlling the position of the cutting tool relative to the housing, the device extending along the shaft and being movable relative to the shaft along the axis defined by the shaft, and being rotatable relative to the shaft around the said axis, the device engaging the cutting tool by means of a cam arrangement in which one of the control device and the cutting tool has an elongate cam track (34) formed in it and the other has a reciprocating follower (18) which can slide in the track, the track being non-parallel to the axis of the shaft. Movement of the control device along the shaft causes relative movement of the follower along the cam track, to cause the position of the cutting tool relative to the housing to change.

摘要: An approach for managing queues of a terminal operating in satellite communications system is disclosed. A hub controls bandwidth allocations in conjunction with a satellite. A plurality of terminals is configured to issue bandwidth allocation requests to the satellite. Each of the terminals has queues that are configured to store the packets, and a queue control logic that is configured to dynamically change depths of the queues according to a prescribed scheme. The prescribed scheme specifies new depths of the plurality of queues based upon past bandwidth allocations associated with the respective queues.

摘要: An insole and/or outsole for a shoe such as an athletic shoe or cleat that includes a multilayer channeled assembly designed at preventing the transfer of heat from extremely hot ground surfaces, most notably synthetic turf, to the foot. In one embodiment, the insole includes a channeled layer of solid material with a very low thermal conductivity, preferably silicon or cork, as the base material beneath a layer of heat resistant felt preferably made of oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibers. The channeling in the base layer allows for air pockets to be created within the insole itself that makes the heat resistant felt more resistant to (i.e., efficient at preventing) the transfer of heat. In another embodiment, the outsole for a shoe such as an athletic shoe or cleat includes a base layer of channeled solid material with low thermal conductivity, silicon, cork, or polystyrene, below a layer of heat resistant felt.

摘要: A method and apparatus is provided for combining a plurality of signals in a digital pipelined signal adder. The method includes the steps of receiving (100) an upstream primary signal in a combiner and error checking 101 the primary signal in the combiner. When the primary signal passes error checking the primary signal is selected (103) and when the primary signal fails error checking a redundant signal is selected (102). The method further includes adding (104) the selected signal and a local input of the plurality of signals within the combiner to produce a downstream primary signal.
