Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting leaks or failures in the insulation of a cold storage container wherein electrically nonconducting conduits are placed in cold transfer relationship with the insulation. The conduits are filled with an ion-conducting material that solidifies when subjected to the temperatures produced by a leak in the insulation and changes conductivity when it solidifies. The conductivity of the material filling the conduits is monitored to detect leaks in the insulation.
