A keyboard, having a plurality of actuatable key switches and an encoder responsive to actuation of each of the key switches for generating a character associated with each actuated key switch, includes a cycle time controller for making all of the characters potentially cycleable. The keyboard encoder, in addition to generating a character, will also generate a KEY SWITCH ACTUATED signal upon actuation of any one of the key switches and until the key switch is deactuated. The cycle timer controller responds to the generation of the KEY SWITCH ACTUATED signal and generates, after the lapse of a predetermined period of time from when the key switch was initially actuated and while the KEY SWITCH ACTUATED signal is still being generated, a CYCLE CHARACTER signal which may be used by a programmable terminal to cause cycling of the character generated by the decoder upon actuation of the key switch. If actuation of a first key switch is followed by actuation of a second key switch, then upon occurrence of the latter the cycle timer controller will be reinitialized and generate the CYCLE CHARACTER signal after the lapse of the predetermined time period from when the second key switch was actuated and while it remains actuated.

A data gathering and transmitting system includes a portable data gathering device having a keyboard and an input/output connector, each operable for entering data into, and for providing access to data previously entered into, a random access memory. Data as entered is displayed simultaneously; data in memory may be selectively accessed for display by addressed locations and in various automatic scan modes. The portable device thus operates as a true electronic notebook. An interface-formatter located at a remote terminal communicates with a computer, and provides for read-out of data from the portable data gathering device and automatic conversion and formatting of the data to a form suitable for direct transmission to the computer, and for print-out of a hard copy of the data. Where a hard copy print-out is not required, a read-out unit may simply transmit the data without formatting to a distant central receiver suitably programmed to receive and interpret the data transmission. Data may also be transmitted from a computer or distant central transmitter to the interface-formatter for entering data into the memory of the electronic notebook via the input-output connector. Thus, data can be loaded into the electronic notebook from a remote computer, the data can be displayed for reference, and field changes and additions can be made to the data. The massaged data can then be transmitted back to the computer.

An auxiliary memory unit for use with electronic calculators which enables verification of a series of numeric data and function entries without requiring manual re-entry. Data and function signals generated by manual actuation of a calculator keyboard are sequentially stored in a storage device in the auxiliary memory unit during a first mode of operation, termed STORE.After a complete series of entries has been made, the stored signals are sequentially read out and displayed in the original order of entry during a second mode of operation, termed READ. The stored function signals are also read out so that the read out numeric data signals are processed by the calculator during READ. The unit further includes edit function circuitry for enabling erroneous data to be corrected by operation of the calculator keyboard, circuitry for providing automatic data alignment at the beginning of the READ operating, and circuitry for indication an incipient full condition for the auxiliary memory unit storage device during the STORE operation.

Entries can be made in the keyboard to produce store, address, and readdress indicator signals as well as data and addresses. An entry detector is provided to develop and store signals in response to the type of entries made in the keyboard. An address transfer unit is provided to receive addresses from the entry unit and addresses retrieved from the storage unit. In response to the signals developed by the entry detector, a transfer control unit operates to cause an address produced by the entry unit to locate a storage element in the storage unit either by directly addressing, or by indirectly addressing, or by successively indirectly addressing storage elements in the storage unit. Both data retrieved from the storage unit and data transferred from the entry unit can be utilized by an arithemtic unit in performing calculations.

A transistorized detector circuit responds to a keying error constituting simultaneous operation of more than one key switch to actuate an error signal. The error condition prevents recording of any data until cleared by selective key operation. Integrated logic circuit means prevents storing and recording of data until spurious pulses generated by making and breaking key switch contacts are suppressed. A write circuit and dual recording head record data on two tracks simultaneously. An end of tape detector, a manually controlled advance circuit for the tape drive step motor, and an automatically actuated signal of low battery voltage are also provided.

An apparatus for producing a magnetically recorded digitally encoded record in response to receipt of external signals, such as from a key operated machine capable of generating such external signals. The source of the external signals may be interfaced to an electrical circuit of a recorder forming part of the aforesaid apparatus for producing a magnetic tape record. The recorder generally includes an input register and two internal buffer registers controlling information transfer rates between the keyboard and the magnetic tape unit. A clock oscillator permits transfer from the input register to the buffer registers and from the buffer registers to an output register. An input major cycle counter and an input minor cycle counter is associated with each of the buffer registers for accumulating the number of words in storage. As counts from the two cycle counters are accumulated, the input from a buffer register is transferred to the output register and written on the tape in pretimed relationship to movement of the tape. Thus, the apparatus provides a magnetically recorded record which is readable by digital computing equipment for automatically preparing a transcription of the record.

A data input preparation machine having keyboard means for use in entering data into buffer storage and processing such data to and from magnetic tape. The buffer storage includes a plurality of positions, each of which positions has storage means for both program and data information. Automatic verification means provide automatic verification of program entries at machine speeds, and memory and field backspace keys permit automatic backspacing to the previously keyed character of the most significant position of a field. The most significant position entries in the program section of buffer storage are also used for the LOF sequences for individual characters in such field, the transport being from the more significant positions of the field to the less significant positions of the field. Alphanumeric display means provide display of characters in a pattern identical to the character pattern on the keyboard; individual members for identifying the selected positions in memory, and alphanumeric program field identifiers all of which materially reduce operator time in the data processing operation. Novel register and memory arrangements using a reduced amount of equipment minimize the cycle process time for both program and data entry.
