摘要:
A method and delivery system for an area-specific precision control of biting insects, including flying and non-flying, biting arthropods, is described. CO2 is metered through a tubing fence and dispensed into the center of traps that serve as visual targets for flying or walking biting arthropods. The outside membrane of a trap can be treated with mineral oil to capture and kill small arthropods such as sand flies of the genus Culicoides, or black flies of the genus Simulium. In addition, the membrane can be treated with insecticide formulations of Permethrin, Resmethrin, or Deltamethrin, to kill larger biting arthropods, such as ticks, mosquitoes, deer flies, horse flies, or stable flies. This method for biting arthropod control is an ecological-friendly alternative to the widespread broadcast application of organophosphate insecticides such as Derspan, Diprom, and Malthion.

Method and apparatus for controlling fire ants. A method is disclosed for controlling colonies of fire ants in the environment. The method includes first providing a stimulating source that, when activated, will attract fire ants to contact the stimulating source and become agitated to a point that ants from a common colony will attack each other. Thereafter, the stimulating source is activated to cause the fire ants to cluster around the stimulating source, become agitated, and attack each other. The stimulated fire ants then are urged into a tightly confined space to exacerbate the attack reaction.

A lure for bees which is utilized during a rescue attempt. The lure is activated by the rescuer and tossed a short distance away from the attack site to draw the attacking bees, together with newly arriving bees, away from the victim and the rescuer. The lure is equipped with a variety of devices designed to attract the bees, including, but not limited to: noise attraction, chemical attraction, and motion attraction.

The invention relates to a biodegradable, single stage pesticide delivery system, to protect wooden structures by controlling insects such as termites, and other wood destroying organisms, particularly the subterranean species. The biodegradable pesticide delivery system is a unique perforated and pressure treated sacrificial wood casing member with an interior cavity prefilled with a pesticide. Foraging wood destroying insects, such as subterranean termites, attack the non pressure treated areas of the wooden casing member. The casing member is a round cylindrical casing. It has also been found that casings in the shape of a square offer different advantages in that longitudinal depressions can be milled into their exterior surfaces which offer a much greater area of forage for attacking insects, eliminating the need to selectively pressure treat the casings. Also squared casings offer the opportunity to cluster multiple casings into one grouped unit, wherein each casing can be charged with a different pesticide. Squared surfaces also offer the opportunity to provide longitudinal or horizontal grooves machined into each exterior surface to simulate termite mud tubes. Also disclosed is the fact that round as well as square casings can have brightly colored location markers as closures, they can have a rubber or other flexible material closure with a self sealing hole for a hypodermic needle to pass there through, for injecting liquid pesticides into the casing. The casings either round or square can have an acoustic monitoring system to detect the presence of foraging insects, and the casings can have lateral holes bored into the same at an angle of 45 degrees from the horizontal to prevent soil from filtering into the casing. Also disclosed is the use of a corrugated paper cavity matrix with graduated alignment of the corrugated openings, to stimulate insect activity at the site, or alternatively, the corrugated paper cavity matrix corrugations may be oriented laterally, or longitudinally, and impregnated, or dusted with a pesticide and become an active pesticide carrier.

An apparatus for destroying mosquitoes by luring them into the apparatus where they are killed and their remains are incinerated. In order to lure the mosquitoes to the apparatus a mixture is emitted that attracts mosquitoes. The mixture contains a chemical attractant for mosquitoes that is stored in a container and metered out automatically. The mixture also contains carbon dioxide that is produced by the incineration of the mosquitoes and the chemical attractant. The apparatus includes an electric heater that heats the apparatus so that its skin temperature approximates the temperature of human skin. Once the mosquitoes are within the apparatus, a high velocity stream of recirculated air captures and carries them to a fan where they are killed and shredded. The shredded remains are incinerated to produce the carbon dioxide and to avoid the disposal of captured mosquitoes. Only a small portion of the recirculated air is emitted to the atmosphere thereby minimizing the consumption of electrical energy.

This invention relates to a composition and procedure for manipulating the behaviour of the webbing clothes moth, Tineola bisselliella (Hummel) (Lepidoptera: Tineidae). In particular, this invention relates to the use of specific semiochemical and sonic signals for manipulating the behaviour of the webbing clothes moths. A composition of chemicals for manipulating the behaviour of clothes moths, said composition comprising two or more chemicals in all possible combinations and ratios selected from the group consisting of: 1) (E,Z)-2,13:octadecadienal; 2) (E,Z)-2,13:octadecadienol; 3) hexadecanoic acid methyl ester; 4) (Z)-9-hexadecenoic acid methyl ester; 5) nonanal; 6) geranylacetone; 7) octanal; 8) decanal; 9) nonenal; 10) octenal; 11) decenal.

A blood-feeding-fly trap composed of 3 or more legs held in position by a top element or elements and a flexible cover. Spacing rods also locate the legs and hold the cover taut. A dark object hangs freely from the top element to attract the flies which are retained in a container at the top of the trap. The design allows easy relocation when assembled. All major elements are held by fasteners that allow assembly and disassembly for efficient manufacture, shipping, and storage.

An apparatus for collecting insects comprising (i) a source of propane, (ii) a propane burner arranged to combust propane from the source of propane so as to produce carbon dioxide and water vapor as products of combustion for attracting insects, and (iii) an insect collector located in proximity to the propane burner for collecting insects attracted to the propane burner. The use of a propane burner provides the desired products of combustion including carbon dioxide and water vapor as well as heat for mimicking the breathing of animals to attract biting insects using readily available propane tanks. The convection of heat from the propane burner is further beneficial because a flow of carbon dioxide and water vapor through the collector may be achieved without the additional requirement of fans or any other complex arrangement of parts. The collector may comprise an electrical grid which does not require a light for attracting insects as do conventional electrical grids for pest control.

A method and a device (10) for trapping insects which feed on mammalian blood, such as mosquitoes, utilize in combination a chemical attractant (24) and a physical attractant consisting of a dark panel (22), heated to e.g., 30 to 45 degrees Celsius. The chemical attractant may include carbon dioxide, generated for example by action of microorganisms on a fermentable substrate in aqueous medium, or it may be selected from fermenting yeast, yeast extract, peptone, acetone, lactic acid and carbon dioxide. The insects may be killed by adhesive applied onto the panel (22).
