摘要:
The device is for use with an ammunition storage drum for a modern multi-barrel high rate-of-fire machine gun (i.e., "Gatling" type gun) system, in which unfired ammunition rounds are transported from the drum to the gun, and the cases of the spent ammunition are returned from the gun to the drum. When two generally, oppositely positioned spent ammunition sensors within the drum simultaneously detect spent ammunition in the drum, a signal is sent to the gun control unit in time to cut off power. The device prevents spent ammunition from being chambered in the gun, and as a result also permits higher rates-of-fire by the gun.

A magazine for storing and delivering ammunition has a housing and a plurty of pairs of rotating members. The housing has curved inboard and outboard walls. Each pair of the members includes an inboard and outboard one, rotatably mounted at the inboard and outboard wall, respectively, at diametrically opposed, interior positions. Also included is inboard and outboard endless carriers disposed on the inboard and outboard ones of the members, respectively, to circulate thereon. The magazine also includes a hand-off sprocket and a plurality of engage rods, the latter being mounted across the carriers and spaced to allow the ammunition to fit therebetween. The hand-off sprocket is mounted alongside the carriers, for removing passing ones of the ammunition.

This invention relates to magazines for guns. The drum magazine of the present invention comprises one or two generally cylindrical drums with openings for the exit of cartridges from within the drum. A spring driven rotor within the drum carries two concentric rings of cartridges in a channel defined by the outer circumference of the rotor and the interior of the cylindrical drum wall. The rotor engages the inner concentric ring of cartridges and each cartridge in the outer ring of cartridges is forced to move by contact with a cartridge of the inner ring. During feeding, the cartridges are advanced as two rings until they meet the cam blade, which gradually forces the cartridges into a single column which moves approximately twice as fast as the velocity of the cartridges in the rotor. When the last cartridge leaves the rotor during feeding and enters the exit passage, a follower arm is provided to continue to push the last cartridge out of the magazine.

In the case of delayed firing of a cartridge or a so-called hang-fire condition in an externally powered firing weapon there must be prevented that further cartridges are fed into the firing weapon. In a known safety or monitoring apparatus of this type a deflector must be pivoted such that the infed cartridges, instead of arriving at the firing weapon, arrive at an ejection channel. The change-over of this deflector requires high acceleration forces because a great mass must be pivoted through a large pivot angle in a short period of time. In accordance with the invention the deflector comprises two segment members which are displaceable in the direction of the cartridge axes, one of which segment members selectively protrudes into the travel path of the cartridges.

A drum-type ammunition magazine includes a plurality of concentric ammunition bays therein with each bay having disposed therein a plurality of fixed tiered partitions for supporting linkless ammunition and a rotatably mounted ammunition carrier for moving the linkless ammunition within the bays and between the fixed tiered partitions and toward a port communicating with each ammunition bay. The ammunition carriers may be operated independent of each other, enabling storage of a different type of ammunition in each of the ammunition bays.

An ammunition container, especially a drum magazine, is subdivided by side walls into a plurality of sector-shaped compartments. Within the ammunition container there is located a cartridge belt, and protruding into each compartment is a loop of such cartridge belt. Each loop of the cartridge belt consists of two loop portions which bear against the side walls of the drum magazine. By means of magnets, located between the side walls of the drum magazine and the loop portions of the cartridge belt, the cartridges are secured against unintentional shifting.
