A commercially available clock IC which is easily influenced by a temperature change or the like is used as it is, thereby easily allowing the clock IC to function as a high precision clock IC. A high precision oscillator is provided separately from a clock circuit as a clock IC. On the basis of a clock signal from the high precision oscillator, a predetermined time, for example, one minute is measured by a high precision clock control circuit. A correction signal is transmitted to the clock circuit as a clock IC from a high precision control circuit every measurement of such a predetermined time, thereby allowing the correcting operation of the time information to be executed. The clock circuit is, consequently, made operative at a precision of the high precision oscillating circuit.

The timepiece includes a low frequency oscillator serving as time base andrranged to feed a first chain of frequency dividers having an adjustable division rate in order to display the time and a high frequency oscillator feeding a second chain of frequency dividers. During an imprecise period established by the first chain (3) reference pulses from the second chain (7) are counted thereby to establish a binary value (HF-DF) representing the amount of imprecision of the first chain in respect of the reference. This value is transferred into a memory in order to correct directly or indirectly the division rate of the first divider chain. There is thus obtained an oscillator having the stability of a high frequency oscillator but with energy consumption only slightly exceeding that of a low frequency oscillator.

An electronic timepiece having a quartz crystal oscillator circuit as a timebase signal source is provided with a temperature compensation system to compensate timebase signal frequency deviations with temperature, all components of the system being incorporated in the timepiece IC chip. The system is based on a temperature-sensitive voltage stabilizer circuit whose output voltage is current-converted to control the frequency of a temperature-insensitive oscillator circuit. Date generated on the basis of the latter oscillator frequency is applied to compensate the timebase signal frequency, by a capacitor switching technique.

A method and apparatus for correcting errors in an electronic digital timepiece that includes an oscillator which has a 2.sup.n frequency output, an n-stage frequency divider for reducing the oscillator output frequency to a time keeping frequency, and means for displaying the count of the time keeping frequency. The error E in the time of the timepiece for an arbitrary period of time T is determined. A computer computes a new adjustment value N+(2.sup.n-m +N)E/T where N is the preceding adjustment value and m is a nonnegative integer less than n. Then the 2.sup.n-m divisor of the first n-m stages of the n-stage frequency divider is adjusted in an amount equal to the new adjustment value. In first and second embodiments of the invention the timepiece is synchronized with a time standard at the beginning of the period of time T. In the first embodiment of the invention the timepiece user observes E (the difference between the time standard and the timepiece time at the end of the period T) and then operates a selected switch to correct the time of the timepiece and to obtain a count for E. In the second embodiment of the invention, the user operates a switch at the beginning of T and at the end of T and a count for E is obtained electronically.

A second hand correction device comprising a second hand correction member which may be moved manually in inward and outward directions and in forward rotation and reverse rotation directions and a cam wheel, having a plurality of cams, which is fixed to the second hand axis. The second hand correction member is moved in such a direction as biased under an engagement with the cam wheel when the same is lowered, and engages with the cam at the rear half of its stroke. Subsequent lowering operation of the second hand correction member will cause the rotation of the cam wheel and thereby the second hand will be rotated by a specified angle to enable a repetitive continuous correction for the second hand.

The effective frequency of the oscillator is adjusted (trimmed) by periodically inhibiting pulses to the divider stage.The pulse inhibit circuit includes a nonvolatile programmable read-only-memory (ROM) to store binary complement information corresponding to the number of oscillator pulses to be suppressed.A counter is periodically preset with the binary complement information and the count advances in response to oscillator pulses. The difference count between the complement number and the counter's maximum count controls the number of pulses periodically suppressed.

A clock has an ornamental pendulum which serves an aesthetic function but does not control the clock mechanism. The pendulum is mounted for free swinging movement on an oscillating shaft in such a manner that, when the pendulum swings in synchronism with the oscillating shaft, the pendulum will be driven by the shaft, but, when the pendulum swings out of synchronism with the oscillating shaft, the pendulum will eventually stop swinging. Adjusting structure is provided to impart to the pendulum a natural period of swing which is in synchronism with the oscillating shaft.

A multimode electronic timepiece has a display, a case, a plurality of manually actuated actuators disposed about said case, and an integrated circuit programmed to keep time and to provide a plurality of modes for performing a plurality of timepiece functions, including a first and second modes. The integrated circuit is further programmed to permit an operator to sequentially cycle a timepiece through the plurality of modes by selectively and repetitively actuating a first actuator. The improved timepiece includes a program for the integrated circuit adapted to dispose the timepiece out of a first and second of the plurality of modes into a first and second operating instruction subroutine in response to actuation of a second actuator. The first and second operating instruction subroutine respectively comprise a first and second set of operating instructions which describe the operation of the actuators when the timepiece is respectively disposed in the first and second modes. The first and second operating instruction subroutines are adapted to allow a timepiece operator to cycle the timepiece through the first and second of operating instructions in response to continuous uninterrupted actuation of the second actuator.

An improved contact spring in a movement for a timepiece having a frame, a stepping motor, an energy cell, a circuit driving the stepping motor with a switching terminal for disabling the stepping motor, a gear train driven by the stepping motor, and a manually actuatable stem disposed in the frame. The improved contact spring comprises a shaped member of electrically conductive spring metal with a battery contact portion and a circuit supply portion respectively engaging the energy cell and the supply terminal of the circuit. The contact spring has a spring biased first arm actuated by movement of the stem, said first arm having a braking portion adapted to supply a braking force to a member of the gear train when the stem is actuated. The arm may further include a switching portion adapted to make and break contact with the switching terminal of the circuit to disable the stepping motor when the stem is actuated. The improved contact spring may further include a spring-biased second arm adapted to provide detenting of the stem.

The various pivoting members--setting-lever (3), rocker lever (14) and correction lever (16)--of a setting mechanism having a setting stem (2) are held in place and pivoted by means of a metal bridge (90) an arm (9) of which forms the setting-lever spring. The setting-lever, the rocker lever and the correction lever are interposed between the plate (1, 10, 11) of the movement and the bridge which not only provides for holding them in position but also provides for pivoting thereof. One of these end sections (21) engages without appreciable clearance into a corresponding hole (101) in the bridge and the other end (4a, 15a, 17a) is located with substantial clearance in a corresponding hole (20) in the plate and serves for the prepositioning of said pivoting element on said plate.
