The invention is a micro-tuning device for pianos and other keyboard-operated stringed musical instruments. A mass is secured to a single string or choir of strings in the musical instrument by an attachment device between the bridge and the agraffe, nut or V-bar, thereby reducing the speaking length and increasing the pitch of the string.

A musical instrument tuning lever kit includes a handle with a first axis along its stem and a second axis defined by its grip, with an axial aperture at the distal end. A shaft component extending along a third axis, receivable within the aperture of the stem of the handle, includes means for attachment of a head component. The head has means for attachment to the shaft component at its first end and means for attachment of a tip component at its second end. The tip has a first end with means for attachment to the head component, and a second end with a socket extending along a fourth axis for turning a tuning pin of a musical instrument. The first and second axes define a first plane, the third axis of the shaft and fourth axis of the socket define a second plane angularly orientable to the handle plane.

Important new descriptors (Down Force Slope and Up Force Slope), which more fully and meaningfully characterize the continuous Down Force and Up Force are revealed. Similar descriptors are also created to more fully characterize the Balance Force and Frictional Force curves. The invention also discloses various methods and means for accurately testing, measuring and determining other parameters (including the position of the at-rest key, key sluggishness, and others characterizing the “let-off” event) in an accurate and efficient manner. Methods of quantifying and measuring the actual inertia of a key action—in a non-invasive manner—are also disclosed, with several inertial parameters being defined. Methods for quantifying and measuring the actual inertia of the major individual components of a key action are also detailed, along with parameters and methods for expressing their contribution “at the key”. All of the various measurement methods of the current invention are performed in a “controlled, kinetic and continuous” manner.

A shank flange for use in a piano for supporting a hammer which makes a pivotal movement in response to depression on a key. The shank flange comprises a molding made of thermosetting resin containing long fibers for reinforcement. The molding is molded by a long-staple method. The long fibers are carbon fibers. The shank flange excels in homogeneity and dimension stability, and has a high rigidity which can assure a smooth and stable action of the hammer. Also, dust and the like can be prevented from sticking to the shank flange and its surroundings, thus maintaining a precise action of the hammer and an aesthetically good appearance around the shank flange.

Method and apparatus for piano head setting device wherein a glue remover is provided to remove glue collars from interconnected hammer shanks and hammer heads, a knuckle remover is provided to lift the shank knuckles from their mortises in the hammer shanks, and a piano hammer head setter is used to set the orignal shape of a hammer to be repaired and to assemble a repaired or replacement hammer to the set shape so that the hammer head of the replacement hammer will strike the piano wire in the same manner as the original.

A fold-out light structure for illuminating the music rack of a piano and having an L-shaped support structure disposed in front of the music rack and comprising a portion of the piano shelf when in the closed position. The support structure has a light mounted on one of the interior walls thereof and is pivotably connected to the vertical portion of the shelf which extends upwardly from the rear of the keyboard, whereby the support structure is pivotably movable outwardly away from the shelf to permit the light to illuminate the music rack located adjacent the rear of the shelf. A switch is preferably disposed for energizing the light, which switch may be automatically actuated when the support is moved to the open position.
