    Abstract: A proposed methodology to startup wells with electrical downhole heating as a preconditioning method for a steam injection process. The downhole electrical heating recovers oil which results in a reduction in the reservoir pressure. Once oil has been recovered for a period of time and the operating pressure and temperature has been reduced, SAGD well pairs are provided between the downhole heater wells, and SAGD or a SAGD-like method used to produce oil. The method reduces heat losses due to steam injection at lower pressure and temperature and therefore, improves efficiency and lowers operating costs. Operating at lower pressure and temperature will also reduce the risk of melting the permafrost and consequent well failure issues. When oil production drops below an economical level, remaining oil can be collected at the DHH wells using the SAGD wellpair for gas or solvent or steam sweeps, or combinations thereof.

    Abstract: Unconventional reservoirs need hydraulic stimulation in all the wells to enhance permeability for an economic production, which accounts for a large part of the well expenditure. However, lack of accurate stress information leads to incorrect selection of producing intervals, which transforms to under-performance in production. An analytical solution is optimized to determine the principal horizontal stresses by integrating the concept of uniaxial elasticity and frictional equilibrium. The software tool allows estimation of the continuous solutions of stresses based on the frictional strength concept. A more realistic considerations of rock rheology in stress estimation and better estimate principal horizontal stress magnitude in the earth crust help in planning and executing hydraulic stimulation operation. The stress estimate also aids in planning important parameters to drill and complete the wells successfully.

    Abstract: A method for separating lighter components of a hydrocarbon product in a container tank includes introducing the hydrocarbon product into the container tank via an inlet located near or at the bottom of the container tank; routing the hydrocarbon product through a pipe-in-pipe conduit that is at least partially surrounded by a bulk fluid stored in the container tank; providing a vapor-liquid interface that allows efficient evaporation of the lighter components resulting in separation of the lighter components and a processed hydrocarbon product; and routing the processed hydrocarbon product into the annular space of the pipe-in-pipe conduit thereby thermally insulating incoming hydrocarbon product from the surrounding bulk fluid and eliminating or minimizing vapor liquid equilibrium shift of the incoming hydrocarbon product caused by increased head pressure and/or reduction in temperature of the incoming hydrocarbon product.

    Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a particularly effective well configuration that can be used for steam-drive based oil recovery methods. Fishbone multilateral wells are combined with steam drive, effectively allowing drive processes to be used where previously the reservoir lacked sufficient injectivity to allow steam drive or cyclic steam based methods.
