Abstract:
Process for treatment of a sapphire part with a beam of a mixture of mono- and multicharged ions of a gas which are produced by an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) source, where: the voltage for acceleration of the ions is between 10 kV and 100 kV; the implanted dose, expressed in ions/cm2, is between (5×1016)×(M/14)−1/2 and 1017×(M/14)−1/2, where M is the atomic mass of the ion; the rate of displacement VD, expressed in cm/s, is between 0.025×(P/D) and 0.1×(P/D), where P is the power of the beam, expressed in W (watts), and D is the diameter of the beam, expressed in cm (centimetres). A part made of sapphire having a high transmittance and which is resistant to scratching is thus advantageously obtained.
Abstract:
A method for pretreating waste water for use in reverse osmosis filtration is provided. Small amounts of chemicals are added to the waste water to promote formation of filterable particles from colloidal and dissolved solids. These particles are then removed via a closed-end, low pressure, high flowrate filtration system prior to reverse osmosis treatment.
Abstract:
Abstract of the Disclosure Apparatus and methods for supplying a portion of a fluid stream and, alternately, a fluid of known composition and concentration to an analyzer are provided. The fluid stream is directed through a series of connected chambers formed in an integral housing. A sampling needle has an inlet in one of the chambers and an outlet in fluid communication with the analyzer. When desired, a tube or vial containing a known fluid may be inserted into a chamber containing the sampling needle, so that the known fluid will be supplied to the analyzer. A second needle provides ventilation to the vial to prevent the formation of a vacuum as the known fluid is drained from the vial.
Abstract:
Water treatment systems or assemblies are normally tested after construction, at least for leaks, prior to shipping or storage. Pressure testing with a gas is hazardous, so testing with water is a standard method. After testing, the water is displaced from the system by draining or gas phase flushing. It is nearly impossible to remove all of the water from the system or assembly. This remaining water provides an environment for biological growth which contaminates the system or assembly over time. The purpose of this invention is to eliminate or minimize this biological contamination by adding a biocidal agent to the system or assembly before sealing it for shipment or storage.
Abstract:
Novel styrene sulfonate-based polymers and cation exchange membranes which are particularly suitable for use in electrodialysis of whey and improved methods for electrodialysis of whey are disclosed.
Abstract:
APPARATUS AND METHOD ARE PROVIDED FORANALYZING GAS STREAMS FOR THEIR CONTENT OF IONIC, ELEMENTIC AND ORGANIC MERCURY EVEN IN THE PRESENCE OF OTHER CONTAMINATS, INCLUDING ELEMENTAL OR AVAILABLE CHLORINE OR ORGANIC MATTER. THE SAMPLE IS FIRST PYROLYZED AND THEN AUTOMICALLY MEASURED AND TREATED WITH AQUEOUS REDUCING REAGENT. THE RESULTING ELEMENTAL MERCURY IS TRANSFERRED TO A PHOTOMETRIC DETECTOR AND THE RESULTS ARE INDICATED AND/OR RECORDED AUTOMATICALLY, ACCURATELY AND RAPIDLY. THE APPARATUS AND METHOD ARE ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN THE CONTROL OF
MERCURY CONTAMINATION IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND ALSO FOR MONITORING CHEMICAL PROCESS STREAMS.
Abstract:
APPARATUS AND METHOD ARE PROVIDED FOR ANALYZING LIQUID STREAM FOR THEIR CONTENT OF MERCURY INCLUDING ELEMENTAL MERCURY, IONIC MERCURY AND UNDISSOCIATED MERCURY COMPOUNDS SUCH AS PHENYL MERCURY AND METHYL MERCURY. THE SAMPLE IS AUTOMATICALLY MEASURED AND FIRST TREATED WITH AN ACIDIC METAL SALT REAGENT CONTAINING AN OXIDANT FOR OXIDIZING ELEMENTARY MERCURY IN THE SAMPLE TO IONIC MERCURY AND THEN WITH HYDRAZINE TO FORMA SUITABLE CATALYTIC COLLID. ELEMENTARY MERCURY IS THEN FORMED BY THE ACTION OF HYDRAZINE AND THE CATALYTIC COLLOID ON THE IONIC AND COMBINED MERCURY AND IS TRANSFERRED TO A PHOTOMETRIC DETECTOR. THE RESULTS ARE INDICATED AND/OR RECORDED AUTOMATICALLY, ACCURATELY AND RAPIDLY. THE AP-
PARATUS AND METHOD ARE ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN THE CONTROL OF MERCURY CONTAMINATION IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND ALSO FOR MONITORING CHEMICAL PROCESS STREAMS.
