A method for purifying a sulfur-containing fuel oil comprising (a) contacting the fuel oil with a supported exogenous binary catalyst and oxygen at a temperature in a range of from about 25° C. to about 150° C., and at a pressure in a range of from about 1 atmosphere to about 150 atmospheres to provide a first oxidized mixture; and (b) separating at least one oxidized sulfur compound from the first oxidized mixture to a provide a purified fuel oil. In one embodiment, the sulfur-containing fuel oil is deasphalted prior to contacting with the supported exogenous binary catalyst and oxygen.

A method for purifying a sulfur-containing fuel oil comprising (a) contacting in a first reaction mixture the sulfur-containing fuel oil with a water-soluble organic acid and oxygen at a temperature in a range of from about 100° C. to about 250° C., and at a pressure in a range of from about 15 pounds per square inch to about 2500 pounds per square inch to provide a first oxidized mixture, (b) adding water to provide a biphasic mixture comprising a water-rich phase and a fuel oil-rich phase, and (c) separating the water-rich phase from the fuel oil-rich phase to provide a purified fuel oil. In one embodiment, the method may further include an oxidation catalyst. In one embodiment, the method may further include a carbonaceous promoter. In one embodiment, the sulfur-containing fuel oil may be deasphalted before contacting with the water-soluble organic acid.

A catalyst system comprising a catalyst and a reductant is disclosed. The catalyst comprises a metal oxide catalyst support, a catalytic metal oxide, and a promoting metal. The catalytic metal oxide comprises gallium oxide, indium oxide or a combination of the two. The promoting metal comprises at least one of silver, cobalt, vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, zinc, tin and bismuth. The catalyst comprises about 5 to about 31 mol % catalytic metal oxide and about 0.5 to about 9 mol % promoting metal. The reductant comprises a fluid hydrocarbon having at least 4 carbon atoms. Also disclosed is a process for reducing NOx to N2 using the disclosed catalyst system by mixing NOx with a reductant and passing the mixture through a catalyst of the disclosed catalyst system.

Disclosed herein is a method comprising reacting a metal borohydride with a metal chloride composition that comprises magnesium chloride in a solvent to form a reaction mixture; wherein either the metal borohydride, the metal chloride composition or both the metal borohydride and the metal chloride composition are soluble in the solvent and a formed metal chloride is insoluble in the solvent; removing the solvent from the reaction mixture to produce a borohydride complex; treating the borohydride complex to obtain magnesium borohydride; extracting magnesium borohydride solvate; and desolvating the magnesium borohydride solvate to form magnesium borohydride.

A method and catalyst system for economically producing aromatic carbonates from aromatic hydroxy compounds. In one embodiment, the present invention provides a method of carbonylating aromatic hydroxy compounds by contacting at least one aromatic hydroxy compound with oxygen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst system that includes a catalytic amount of an inorganic co-catalyst containing ytterbium. In various alternative embodiments, the carbonylation catalyst system can include an effective amount of a palladium source and an effective amount of a halide composition. Further alternative embodiments can include catalytic amounts of various inorganic co-catalyst combinations.
