    Abstract: Propulsion systems and methods of operation are provided. An exemplary propulsion system comprises a rotating element; a stationary element; an inlet duct having an inlet between the rotating and stationary elements, the inlet passing radially inward of the stationary element; a ducted fan disposed in the inlet duct downstream of the inlet and having an axis of rotation and a plurality of blades; a gas turbine engine core having a high pressure compressor, a combustor, and a high pressure turbine in serial relationship; and a booster compressor disposed between the ducted fan and the gas turbine engine core. At least one of the ducted fan and the booster compressor is driven by a variable speed power source such that the rotational speed of the ducted fan and/or booster compressor is controllable independently from the rotational speed of any rotor of the propulsion system.

    Abstract: A turbofan engine is provided. The turbofan engine includes a fan comprising a plurality of rotatable fan blades, each fan blade defining a fan tip speed; a turbomachine operably coupled to the fan for driving the fan, the turbomachine comprising a compressor section, a combustion section, and a turbine section in serial flow order and together defining a core air flowpath; and a gear box, wherein the turbomachine is operably coupled to the fan through the gear box, wherein a gear ratio of the gear box is greater than or equal to 1.2 and less than or equal to 3.0; wherein during operation of the turbofan engine at a rated speed the fan tip speed is greater than or equal to 1000 feet per second. In exemplary embodiments, during operation of the turbofan engine at the rated speed the fan pressure ratio is less than or equal to about 1.5.

    Abstract: A gearbox monitoring system can include a fan, compressor, combustor, and turbine in axial flow arrangement, with corresponding rotating components mounted to a shaft, and a gearbox assembly operably coupled to the shaft and connecting the turbine and the fan. The gearbox assembly can include a carrier, a sun gear, at least one planet gear, and a ring gear. An oil feed tube is coupled to the gearbox for lubricating at least one of the sun, ring or planet gears. One or more bearings rotationally supports at least one of the sun gear, ring gear, or planet gear relative to the carrier. In addition, at least one vibration sensor is part of the gearbox monitoring system.
