The present inventions provide methods and systems for reducing the peak to average power ratio of a multi-carrier signal. Reducing the peak to average power ratio of a signal ensures that amplifiers and transmitters are not saturated, causing loss of data. Further, reducing peak to average power ratios reduces the consumption of power during transmission. Peak to average power ratios are reduced by applying a peak reduction signal component to one or more of the plurality of information signals that make up the multi-carrier signal. In one embodiment the peak reduction signal is a basis function of the communication system. The information signal is mapped to duplicate constellation points, which may be easily decoded by a receiver by performing a modulo operation. Negation of the peaks may be performed iteratively to remove any peaks produced during prior peak reduction operations.

A variety of bi-directional data transmission systems that facilitate communications between a plurality of remote units (15) and a central unit (10) using a frame based discrete multi-carrier transmission scheme are disclosed. In each of the systems, frames transmitted from the plurality of remote units (15) are synchronized at the central unit (10). A variety of novel modem arrangements and methods for coordinating communications between a plurality of remote units (15) and a central unit (10) to facilitate multi-point-to-point transmission are disclosed. The invention has application in a wide variety of data transmission schemes including Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line systems that includes the transmission of signals over twisted pair, fiber and/or hybrid telephone lines, cable systems that includes the transmission of signals over a coaxial cable, and digital cellular television systems that include the transmission of radio signals.

A receiver or receiver system for high speed data communications having a radio frequency noise canceller is disclosed. The radio frequency noise canceller removes radio-frequency noise from received signals over a transmission medium by adaptively estimating the radio-frequency noise during data transmission. In one embodiment, the radio frequency noise canceller includes: an adaptive filter for producing a noise cancellation signal by filtering a reference noise signal based on filter parameters, a subtractor for subtracting the noise cancellation signal from the first signal to produce the second signal; and an update circuit for enabling, at predetermined times, modification of the parameters of the adaptive filter based on the then existing second signal. A method for removing radio frequency noise is also disclosed.

A trellis shaper for multi-channel modulation is provided as a means for obtaining significant shaping gain in applications requiring high-performance transceivers. The trellis shaper works across the subchannels in the multi-channel system and accommodates both the variable amounts of power and the different constellation sizes associated with the various tones. This invention offers significant advantage over the more straightforward approach of shaping each subchannel independently in terms of a reduction in delay, a reduction in memory requirements, and a reduction in complexity.

A method for optimizing a set of equalizer parameters of an equalizer to be used to equalize a multicarrier data signal that has been transmitted through a distorting channel, comprised of the steps of initializing the parameters, repeatedly sending a training sequence through the channel to the receiver, using the equalizer parameters, the received sequence, and a local replica of the training sequence to update a set of channel target response parameters, windowing the channel target response parameters, using the channel target response parameters, the received sequence and the local replica to update the equalizer parameters, and windowing the equalizer parameters. This training process is repeated until a predetermined convergence condition is detected.
