摘要: Pathogens (e.g., viruses or bacteria) within a volume of air can be killed or deactivated using RF energy. A plurality of phase shifters input an RF signal and output a phase-shifted version of the RF signal at their respective outputs, wherein an amount of phase shift introduced by each of the phase shifters is controllable. A phased array antenna has a plurality of microwave radiators, and each of the respective outputs of the phase shifters drives a respective one of the microwave radiators. A controller controls the phase shifters to drive the phased array antenna such that a beam of RF energy emanates from the phased array antenna and sweeps through a volume positioned in front of the phased array antenna, and the beam of RF energy kills or deactivates the pathogens.

摘要: Distributed liquid-flow systems—in which flow spreads out from a system inlet and traverses the system through multiple discrete, smaller flow channels—are constructed to minimize variations in flow-resistance-induced pressure drop from the system inlet to entrances to the flow channels. Because flow-driving pressure will be more uniform at the entrances to the flow channels, flow along the channels will be more uniform. Disclosed embodiments may be particularly suitable or advantageous for use in gas-exchange/artificial lung devices.

摘要: Cardiac monitoring is implemented by transmitting ultrasound energy into a lung of the subject, receiving ultrasound reflections, detecting Doppler shifts in the received reflections, and processing the Doppler shifts into power and velocity data. A plurality of cardiac cycles are identified within the power and velocity data, and a plurality of features corresponding to each of the plurality of cardiac cycles are identified. The identified features are characterized into a set of parameters, and the set of parameters is transmitted to a remote location. The set of parameters is analyzed at the remote location to determine if an abnormality exists. If an abnormality exists, an indication is output from the remote location.

摘要: Medical devices that have been implanted into human bodies (as well as other devices that have been implanted into other objects) and are controllable via RF commands are subject to intentional tampering and unintentional interference. This drawback can be avoided by designing the implanted system so that either (a) the implanted system can only be controlled via ultrasound signals, or (b) the implanted system can only be controlled via non-ultrasound signals (e.g., RF signals) after the system has been unlocked in response to receipt of a particular ultrasound signal. Because ultrasound waves at the relevant frequencies (e.g., 1-5 MHz) can only enter a body when an ultrasound transmitter is positioned in direct contact with the body, these configurations provide a significant amount of additional security.

摘要: Operation of a patient's lungs may be analyzed by transmitting ultrasound energy into the patient's lung, and obtain power and velocity Doppler data while a vibration is being induced in the lung. At least one portion of the power and velocity data that corresponds to a fundamental harmonic is then identified. In some embodiments, portions of the power and velocity data that corresponds to higher order harmonics are also identified. The power observed in the fundamental harmonic and optionally the higher order harmonics can then be used to determine the condition of the lungs.

摘要: Data is communicated from an implanted section to an external location. The implanted section includes a transducer such as a piezoelectric element with an ultrasound reflecting surface that moves in response to an applied driving signal. A sensor generates an output signal that depends on a sensed parameter, and a control circuit drives the transducer based on the sensor's output. The transducer's response to the driving signal is repeatable such that the value of the output signal can be determined by measuring the variations in the velocity of the surface using externally applied Doppler ultrasound, and computing the value of the sensor's output from the measured variations in velocity.

摘要: Methods and apparatuses for monitoring the level of glucose or other constituents in live subjects are disclosed. Stem cells are obtained from the subject and processed into cells that change their optical characteristics in response to a level of the constituent. The responsive cells are formed into clusters and implanted into in the subject's body at locations that permit optical monitoring from outside the subject's body. The implanted cell clusters are illuminated and the reflected illumination from each of the cell clusters is detected. Changes in the optical characteristics of the cell clusters that correspond to the responses of the cell clusters are identified, and the identified changes are mapped to a constituent level based on calibration data for each cell cluster. An indication of the constituent level in the subject is then output.

摘要: Operation of a patient's heart or lungs may be analyzed by transmitting ultrasound energy into the patient's lung, and detecting Doppler shifts of reflected ultrasound induced by moving borders between blood vessels/soft tissue in the lung and air filled alveoli that surround the blood vessels. Movement of the border is caused by pressure waves in the blood vessels that result in changes in diameter of those blood vessels. The detected Doppler shifts are processed with a noise reduction algorithm, and periodic features in the resulting data are then analyzed to determine the rate of the patient's heartbeat, the rate of the patient's breathing, and/or the appearance of anomalies in the patient's heartbeat.

摘要: Blood or other fluids can be caused to interact with a gas by providing a plurality of fluid flow channels that are surrounded by nanotubes, each of the channels having an inflow end and an outflow end, wherein each of the channels is wide enough for the blood to flow through, and wherein the nanotubes are spaced close enough to each other to retain the fluid within the channels when the blood is flowing through the channels. The fluid is then passed through the through the channels while a gas is passed through the spaces between the nanotubes outside the fluid flow channels. This permits the gas to interact with the fluid in the channels.
