A method and system for regression-based object detection in medical images is disclosed. A regression function for predicting a location of an object in a medical image based on an image patch is trained using image-based boosting ridge regression (IBRR). The trained regression function is used to determine a difference vector based on an image patch of a medical image. The difference vector represents the difference between the location of the image patch and the location of a target object. The location of the target object in the medical image is predicted based on the difference vector determined by the regression function.

A system and method for performing shape-constrained aortic valve landmark detection using 3D medical images is provided. A rigid global shape defining initial positions of a plurality of aortic valve landmarks is detected within a 3D image. Each of the plurality of aortic valve landmarks is detected based on the initial positions.

A method and system for automatic extraction of personalized left atrium models is disclosed. A left atrium chamber body is segmented from a 3D image volume. At least one pulmonary venous ostium is detected on the segmented left atrium chamber body. At least one pulmonary vein trunk connected to the left atrium chamber body is segmented based on the detected pulmonary venous ostia.

CAD (computer-aided diagnosis) systems and applications for cardiac imaging are provided, which implement methods to automatically extract and analyze features from a collection of patient information (including image data and/or non-image data) of a subject patient, to provide decision support for various aspects of physician workflow including, for example, automated assessment of regional myocardial function through wall motion analysis, automated diagnosis of heart diseases and conditions such as cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease and other heart-related medical conditions, and other automated decision support functions. The CAD systems implement machine-learning techniques that use a set of training data obtained (learned) from a database of labeled patient cases in one or more relevant clinical domains and/or expert interpretations of such data to enable the CAD systems to “learn” to analyze patient data and make proper diagnostic assessments and decisions for assisting physician workflow.

The present invention relates to a method for visually detecting and tracking an object through a space. The method chooses modules for a restricting a search function within the space to regions with a high probability of significant change, the search function operating on images supplied by a camera. The method also derives statistical models for errors, including quantifying an indexing step performed by an indexing module, and tuning system parameters. Further the method applies a likelihood model for candidate hypothesis evaluation and object parameters estimation for locating the object.

A method and system for extracting coronary vessels fluoroscopic image sequences using coronary digital subtraction angiography (DSA) are disclosed. A set of mask images of a coronary region is received, and a sequence of contrast images for the coronary region is received. For each contrast image, a motion estimate is calculated between each of the mask images and a background region of the contrast image and a covariance is calculated for each motion estimate. Multiple background layer predictions are generated by generating a background layer prediction for each mask image based on the calculated motion estimate and covariance. The multiple background layer estimates are combined using statistical fusion to generate a final estimated background layer. The final estimated background layer is subtracted from the contrast image to extract a coronary vessel layer for the contrast image.

The present invention is directed to a method for populating a database with a set of images of an anatomical structure. The database is used to perform appearance matching in image pairs of the anatomical structure. A set of image pairs of anatomical structures is received, where each image pair is annotated with a plurality of location-sensitive regions that identify a particular aspect of the anatomical structure. Weak learners are iteratively selected and an image patch is identified. A boosting process is used to identify a strong classifier based on responses to the weak learners applied to the identified image patch for each image pair. The responses comprise a feature response and a location response associated with the image patch. Positive and negative image pairs are generated. The positive and negative image pairs are used to learn a similarity function. The learned similarity function and iteratively selected weak learners are stored in the database.

A method for performing image based regression using boosting to infer an entity that is associated with an image of an object is disclosed. A regression function for a plurality of images is learned in which for each image the associated entity is known. The learned regression function is used to predict an entity associated with an image in which the entity is not known.

Heart valve operation is assessed with patient-specific medical diagnostic imaging data. To deal with the complex motion of the passive valve tissue, a hierarchal model is used. Rigid global motion of the overall valve, non-rigid local motion of landmarks of the valve, and surface motion of the valve are modeled sequentially. For the non-rigid local motion, a spectral trajectory approach is used in the model to determine location and motion of the landmarks more efficiently than detection and tracking. Given efficiencies in processing, more than one valve may be modeled at a same time. A graphic overlay representing the valve in four dimensions and/or quantities may be provided during an imaging session. One or more of these features may be used in combination or independently.

Disclosed is a method and system for detecting a boundary of a vessel in an image. Edges in the image are detected. Edge detection is based on the change in intensity over some distance while varying the scale of the distance. A set of edges is then selected from the detected edges. An initial vessel boundary is determined based on the selected set, and a shape descriptor (e.g., one or more elliptical shape descriptors) is applied to the initial vessel boundary to determine a final vessel boundary.
