An image data processing method of the present invention comprises the steps of scale-down shifting a first color space point outside a maximum color reproduction area of an output unit to a second color space point within the maximum color reproduction area of the output unit; computing an amount of shift by which the first color space point is shifted to the second color space point; converting the second color space point to a third color space point within a color reproduction area smaller than the maximum color reproduction area of the output unit; and outputting an image to the output unit using image data obtained by scale-up shifting the third color space point to a fourth color space point within the maximum color reproduction area of the output unit based on the computed shift amount.

For this purpose, black ink in which the coloring agent is a pigment and at least cyan, magenta and yellow color ink in which the coloring agents are dyes are prepared, and the kind and ratio of the ink used is changed in response to the kind of recording medium and the printing mode, taking account of the properties of the pigment ink and the dye ink.

An exposure method and apparatus in which a first member such as a reticle is illuminated with a light from a light source such as an excimer laser so that the image of a pattern carried by the first member is projected through a projecting optical system onto a second member such as a semiconductor wafer, thereby exposing the second member to the pattern. At least one of the first and the second members and the projecting optical system is adjusted along the optical axis of the projecting optical system and the focus condition of the pattern image on the second member is detected by a focus detecting device during the movement of the member. The exposure is effected in accordance with the output signal from the focus detecting device without requiring the movement of the member to be stopped.

A method and an apparatus for scanning exposure, with a pulsed laser beam. A pattern of a first member is irradiated by the pulsed laser beam and the pattern of the first member is projected onto a second member. During the pattern projection the first and second members are moved in a predeterminedly synchronized relation, while the irradiation or pulse emission and the movement of the first and second members are co-ordinate with each other, whereby a uniform or substantially uniform amount of exposure is ensured on the second member. In one preferred form, a relationship V=LN is satisfied, wherein V is the speed of scanning movement of the first and second objects or the moving speed of the first object, L is the spacing between two positions in the scan direction corresponding to the intensity level portions which are approximately equal to a half of the maximum level of the intensity distribution of each pulse, and N is the number of repetition of pulse emission per one second.
