Abstract:
A sealing device comprises a component encircling a shaft with the component having a steeped circular groove coaxial with the shaft. The deeper portion of the groove is closer to the surface of the shaft than the shallower portion and the edge of the step defining the two portions is located at a distance from the surface of the shaft that is greater than the radius but smaller than the diameter of an O-ring received in the groove. Means are provided for leading the O-ring against the edge of the step and roll into the deeper portion of the groove thus effecting a seal between the component and the shaft.

1,195,132. Rotary shaft seals. DANFOSS A/S. 24 Jan., 1968 [6 Feb., 1967], No. 3666/68. Heading F2B. A rotary pump shaft 1 is sealed by means comprising a pair of coaxial sealing rings 18 and 24 urged into sealing contact with annular seatings 20 and 20a by springs 19 and 35 respectively, the springs 35 acting between the sealing rings. The seatings 20 and 20a are portions of a seal face 16 formed on a coating 15 of wear-resisting material on a bearing plate 10 and the spring 19 is compressed between the ring 18 and a seating 17 secured to the shaft and driving the ring 18 by means of teeth 21. The ring 24 is urged against the face 16 and driven from the ring 18 by the springs 35. The rings 18 and 24 are slidably sealed to the shaft by packing rings 22 and 25 respectively. The plate 10 is axially located by a spring washer 12 and sealed to the pump housing 2 by a ring 11. The space 27 between the rings 18 and 24 is connected via passages 29, 30 and 31 and a check valve 32 with the pump suction. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the connection to the pump suction is omitted and the springs 35 are replaced by a spring washer (26), the rings (18) and (24) having interengaging teeth (28). In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the plate (10) rotates with the shafts (1) and the rings (18) and (24) are non- rotatable and are sealed to the housing (2) by sealing rings (41) and (42) respectively. The bearing plate may be made of cast iron or mild steel coated with molybdenum, metal carbide or a ceramic and the outer and inner sealing rings may be of synthetic carbon and P.T.F.E. respectively.
