The photosensitive layer contains a compound represented by the formula (I), 1 wherein X is selected from the group consisting of a single bond, O, CO, and COO, each of R1 and R2 is independently selected from the group consisting of an optionally substituted aromatic hydrocarbon group, an optionally substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a polycyclic aromatic ring represented by formula (Ia), and a heterocyclic ring represented by formula (Ia), 2 wherein Y represents a residual group to form said polycyclic aromatic ring or said heterocyclic ring, and said substituent being selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl group, a cyano group, a nitro group and a halogen atom. The resulting electrophotographic photoconductor exhibits reduced residual potential after charging and exposure to light, and therefore facilitates high quality imaging.

An electrophotographic photoconductor having an electrically conductive substrate and a photosensitive layer formed on the conductive substrate is provided wherein the photosensitive layer comprises a layer that contains titanyl oxyphthalocyanine as a photoconductive material, and alkyl polyol that is diol or higher polyol and has hydroxyl groups for every three carbon atoms in a main chain of the alkyl polyol. The content of the alkyl polyol is controlled such that the amount of the hydroxyl groups of the alkyl polyol is in a range of 0.1 mol to 100 mol per 1 mol of titanyl oxyphthalocyanine. A method of manufacturing this electrophotographic photoconductor is also disclosed.

An electrification enhancer is either contained in the photoconductor, is present as a coating on the surface thereof, or is applied prior to use. A compound such as ammonium fluoride, a ferroelectric substance, a high molecular substance (fluorine resin) with an equivalent work function of 4.10 or greater, etc. are effective. The chargeability of the photoconductor is improved. The construction is best suited for the rear photorecording process, but is also effective in other types of contact charging recording systems.
