Abstract: A rocker arm 1 includes an arm body 4 prepared from a single plate material by means of a press work. The arm body 4 includes a pair of parallel side walls 5 and a connecting wall 6 bridging between the opposite side walls 5 and also having a pivot support hole 7 defined at a location generally intermediate of the length of the arm body 4. A roller support pin for rotatably supporting a roller 10 for driving engagement with a cam is mounted on one ends 1a of the opposite side walls 5, while the opposite end 1b of the connecting wall 6 defines an overlapped structure 13 formed by bending an end overlap piece 12, extending integrally from a side edge of the connecting wall 6, backwardly to overlap the connecting wall 6. This overlapped structure 13 in turn defines an adjustment element 16 having a mounting hole 15 defined therein for adjustably receiving a valve driving member 14. The rocker arm 1 may be designed to be an end pivot type, in which case the adjustment element 16 is provided with a pivot member.

Abstract: There is provided a rocker arm of a kind in which even though the rocker arm is manufactured by the use of a press working technique the arm width can be minimized while the flat outer surface region of a required width is secured on an outer surface of the connecting wall, thereby contributing to reduction in size and weight of the rocker arm. This rocker arm 1 is capable of being driven by a cam 2 for selectively opening and closing a valve 3 of an internal combustion engine. This rocker arm 1 includes an arm body 4 prepared by bending a single plate material to represent a generally inverted U-shaped section including opposite side walls 5 and a connecting wall 6 bridging between the opposite side walls 5. A roller 10 engageable with the cam 2 is rotatably mounted on a portion of the arm body 4 generally intermediate of the length thereof. A valve drive element 8 is mounted on one end of the arm body 4 for driving the valve 4, while an end portion of the connecting wall 6 adjacent the other end of the arm body 4 is formed with an internally helically threaded hole 12 for threadingly receiving therein an externally helically threaded pivot member 7. An outer chamfered corner delimited between an outer surface of the connecting wall 6 and an outer surface of each of the opposite side walls and formed by bending is deformed to represent a plastically deformed portion 4a so formed by means of a plastic deformation technique that the outer chamfered corner represents a small radius of curvature R.

Abstract: The inventions provides a method of making a lever-type cam follower (2) out of thin-walled light-weight sheet metal for loading at least one gas exchange valve of an internal combustion engine, said cam follower comprising two side walls (12a, 12b) which, together with a crossbeam (11) that connects these side walls to each other, form a U-shaped cross-sectional profile pointing away from the gas exchange valve, the cam follower further comprising two finger-like tabs (5a, 5b) for receiving a stem end of the gas exchange valve, which tabs are configured on one end (3) of the cam follower (2) as extensions of the side walls (12a, 12b) and are bent through 180null onto an undersurface (9) of the crossbeam (11), said method comprising the following steps which may be supplemented with further intermediate steps: a) punching out a blank (1) out of sheet metal with the tabs (5a, 5b) being bulged outward in arc-shaped curves that are configured as mirror images of each other in respect of a central longitudinal axis (4) of the cam follower (2), b) bending or deep drawing the side walls (12a, 12b) so that they extend at right angles to the crossbeam (11), and c) bending the tabs (5a, 5b) onto the undersurface (9) of the crossbeam (11). By punching out the tabs (5a, 5b) with arc-shaped curves, as described in step a), waste of sheet metal is reduced because the blank has a shorter length.
