An AM radio receiver of a double superheterodyne type. Where a first intermediate frequency is selected to be a low frequency of several kHz other than 0 kHz. A second intermediate frequency is selected to be several tens of kHz. A first local oscillator circuit formed of a PLL generates first local oscillation signals of two kinds whose phases are different from each other by 90.degree.. First and second mixer circuits are respectively supplied with the first local oscillation signals of two kinds and mix them with a received signals to generate the first intermediate frequency. First and second filters obtain signals each having the first intermediate frequency. A second local oscillator circuit generates second local oscillation signals of two kinds whose phases are different from each other by 90.degree.. Third and fourth mixer circuits are respectively supplied with the signals having the first intermediate frequency and mix them with the second local oscillation signals. An adding circuit adds both signals output from the third and fourth mixer circuits. A third filter is supplied with a signal from the adding circuit and obtains a signal having a second intermediate frequency. Then, an AM detecting circuit detects an amplitude of the signal having the second intermediate frequency to obtain an audio signal. The AM radio receiver has an IC incorporating an intermediate-frequency selecting device which operates as described above.

The invention pertains to a homodyne receiver, in particular for angle-modulated carrier signals in which the converted signal (ZF) has a d.c. voltage portion, and a process for correcting the converted receiving signal. Essentially three classes of errors occur with homodyne receivers: d.c. offset, amplitude difference and phase errors between the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) branches. Standard adjustments of the local oscillator with phase-locked loop (PLL) do not work in the case of weak signals. To use cost-effective, rapid analog/digital converters, particularly the d.c. offset has to be separated out. In so far as this has been done previously and the I and Q signal were corrected also, these corrections could be accomplished only with expensive components in the RF class. To avoid this the invention provides an arithmetic unit that is designed for converting into a circle the ellipse set by the distorted I and Q signals. The ellipse parameters are determined in particular by means of an equalizing computation using at least five samples of the I and Q signals. From the ellipse parameters the errors causing the elliptical form are then calculated and compensated.

The describe demodulators are designed to minimize the amount of duplicated circuitry required to implement a joint QAM/VSB demodulator capable of performing the functions of the disclosed individual QAM and VSB demodulators. All digital architectures are used for each of the described demodulators to facilitate their combination into the described joint VSB/QAM demodulator. The described demodulators are suitable for demodulating, e.g, advanced or high definition television signals modulated using QAM or VSB modulation techniques.

A high frequency television signal receiving apparatus providing excellent linear detection of output characteristics by improving the phase characteristic of the picture synchronous detector. A variable capacitive element is equivalently connected in parallel to a reference solid-state oscillation element. The reference solid-state oscillation element controls the frequency of a local oscillation device including a PLL circuit for feeding a local oscillation signal to a mixer for converting a high frequency signal into an intermediate frequency signal. A first low pass filter is connected between a phase comparator for detecting a phase difference of the intermediate frequency signal and the output of a detection oscillator for generating a detection oscillation signal with a specific phase difference. A second low pass filter having a larger time constant than the first low pass filter is connected to the variable capacitive element. The capacitance of the variable capacitive element is varied by the output voltage of the phase comparator. The signal frequency of the local oscillation device is shifted, and is controlled to converge the frequency of the intermediate frequency signal within the frequency range of the detection oscillation signal.
