For the purpose of pouring a stepwise advanced casting mould consisting of identical, flaskless mould parts having vertical joints at which there are provided inlets or chutes extending from the top surface of the mould to its casting cavities, use is made of a pouring tundish having a slitlike bottom outlet adapted to cover three or more inlets temporarily blocked by an obstruction. After an additive has been fed to the tundish this is being filled with the necessary amount of molten iron which prior to removal of the obstruction gets the opportunity of being merged uniformly with the additive, and possible slag products may at the same time rise to the surface. The pouring tundish may meanwhile be advanced one or more steps together with the casting mould while being in firm contact with its top face. After the pouring step has finished the pouring tundish may be disengaged from the casting mould and be returned past the starting position to be fed with additive, and is subsequently ready for a new operation. For a given cycle time of the plant, the period available for the pouring operation may be considerably extended, thereby entailing quality improvements in the produced castings.

An apparatus for performing the above-noted method includes, according to a preferred embodiment, a source of compressed gas having a pressure hood mountable over the inlet of the mold, and a drilling tool disposed within a suction hood which is placed in a sealing engagement with the top flask after the drilling tool has been properly aligned with the blind hole that is to form part of the air vent or hole.

An improved method of forming a shell mold for casting having a shrink bob is provided. A tubular frusto-conical shrink bob, or riser, is first formed from sand and a plastic or resin binder such that both the apex and base of the riser are open. The riser is then inverted and positioned on a casting pattern with the apex of the riser abutting against the casting pattern. The entire pattern is then cast with a thermosetting material, such as sand and a binder, such that the thermosetting material bonds to both the pattern and the riser. After hardening, the thermosetting material with the attached riser forms a shell mold which is subsequently utilized in a foundry casting operation.

Apparatus for molding, by inoculation, cast iron parts requiring a spheroidal graphite texture, includes a mold containing the impression of the item to be cast and a treatment chamber, situated within the inlet channel of the mold, which opens into the impression of the part. The chamber contains the necessary inoculant for the casting of parts, and the volume of the chamber is equal to the sum of the volumes of the part being cast and the deadhead. The chamber is closed off from the impression portion of the mold by means of a temporary plug which is capable of being destroyed by means of the combined action of the temperature and pressure of the molten metal, the inoculation being performed within this chamber during the time necessary for the destruction of the temporary plug. Further, a separator disk of neutral refractory material, having a cavity containing a substance for completing the action of the inoculant, is placed immediately downstream of the temporary destructible plug within the inlet to the impression portion of the mold. The apparatus is particularly adapted for the production of rather large cast iron parts with spheroidal graphite, such as for example, the crankshafts of internal combustion engines.

The upper part of a foundry mold is manufactured by utilizing a pattern device which includes a gate pin having a guide hole therein which is adapted to engage a guide pin extending from the mold pattern of the foundry mold in order to retain the pattern device in place during production of the upper part of the foundry mold. An upper trough pattern may be mounted for axial movement relative to the gate pin. The upper trough pattern is configured to define a trough from which a plurality of gate pins may extend. By structuring at least two of the gate pins located at opposite ends of the trough with guide holes engaging guide pins extending from the mold pattern, rotation of the upper trough pattern about either of the guide pins may be prevented.
