Abstract: A casting method includes forming a seed. The seed has a first end and a second end. The forming includes bending a seed precursor. The seed second end is placed in contact or spaced facing relation a chill plate. The first end is contacted with molten material. The molten material is cooled and solidifies so that a crystalline structure of the seed propagates into the solidifying material. The forming further includes inserting the bent seed precursor into a sleeve leaving the bent seed precursor protruding from a first end of the sleeve.

Abstract: A directional solidification casting method includes fluidly coupling a feed line conduit with a source of molten metal and with a directional solidification mold at a gating. The mold has an interior chamber with a shape of an object to be cast using directional solidification in a growth direction. The feed line conduit is fluidly coupled with the gating in a downward direction oriented at an angle that is closer to the growth direction of the mold than to another direction that is perpendicular to the growth direction of the mold. The method also includes positioning a downstream portion of the feed line conduit below the gating, directing the molten metal into the mold via the feed line conduit, and casting the object in the mold using directional solidification.

Abstract: Disclosed are a high-boron high-vanadium high-speed steel and a method for preparing the same. Pig iron, scrap steel, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferroboron, ferrovanadium, industrial pure iron, ferromolybdenum, ferrotungsten, ferrosilicon and ferrotitanium are subjected to smelting at 1580-1600° C. and refining to obtain a liquid steel. The liquid steel is subjected to superheating, and directional solidification at a casting temperature of 1420-1430° C., and cooled to room temperature to obtain the directionally solidified high-speed steel.

Abstract: Provided are a slide material in which the joining strength between a Bi-containing copper alloy layer and a substrate is improved, and a method for manufacturing the slide material. The slide material according to the present invention has a substrate and a copper alloy layer. The copper alloy layer comprises a copper alloy containing 4.0-25.0 mass % of Bi and has a structure in which Bi phases are scattered in a copper alloy structure. The contact area ratio of Bi phases of the copper alloy layer at the joining interface with the substrate is not more than 2.0%. The slide material is manufactured by casting a molten copper alloy onto a substrate and causing the copper alloy to solidify unidirectionally.

Abstract: An aluminum alloy cast impeller has a stable high-temperature strength (e.g., 0.2% proof stress value of 260 MPa or more) at about 200° C. A boss part, blade parts, and a disc part have secondary dendrite arm spacings of 20 to 50 μm, 10 to 35 μm, and 5 to 25 μm, respectively, and satisfy the relationship Amax>Bmax>Cmax, where Amax, Bmax, and Cmax are the maximum values of the secondary dendrite arm spacings of the boss part, the blade parts, and the disc part, respectively.
