The system may process the video asset to allow a video provisioning system to distribute the video asset to a set top box and another device that is a different type of device than the set top box. Processing the video asset may include verifying that the video asset conforms to one or more predetermined formats, decrypting the video asset, verifying that the video asset complies with a particular standard of quality, or transcoding the video asset in a manner that is supported by the set top box and the other device. The system may store the transcoded video asset.

If there is a discontinuity in presentation time stamp value between a next frame and a first frame, a value representing a stream time stamp of interest is assigned to a variable for representing the value of the stream time stamp of interest at a point of discontinuity in presentation time stamp, and a value of the presentation time stamp is assigned to a variable for representing the first frame's clock time based on presentation time stamp, and the next frame is stored in a database using as an index the value representing a stream time stamp of interest.

In this apparatus, a clock reference is detected from a packet signal containing the clock reference and a digitally compressed video signal, a time stamp for a packet is generated using a clock signal in phase with the clock reference and added to the particular packet, and the packet signals with the time stamp added thereto are recorded closely to each other in a data storage element such as a magnetic recording medium. At playback, the packet interval is output by being restored to the original length on the basis of the time stamp added to the packet in store.
