Abstract: An injection locked transmitter for an optical communication network includes a primary seed laser source input substantially confined to a single longitudinal mode, an input data stream, and a laser injected modulator including at least one secondary laser having a resonator frequency that is injection locked to a frequency of the single longitudinal mode of the primary seed laser source. The laser injected modulator is configured to receive the primary seed laser source input and the input data stream, and output a laser modulated data stream.

Abstract: An edge wavelength-switching system includes an optical switch and a wavelength selective switch. The optical switch includes a west hub-side port, an east hub-side port, a west local-side port, and an east local-side port. The wavelength selective switch includes (i) a multiplexed port optically coupled to the west local-side port and (ii) a bypass port optically coupled to the east local-side port, and (iii) a plurality of demultiplexed ports. An optical network includes a network hub including an M-by-N1 wavelength-selective switch, N1>M≥1, a first network node, and a second network node. Each of the first and second network nodes includes a respective edge wavelength-switching system. The network hub, the first network node, and the second network node are optically coupled.

Abstract: An access network includes a first local network node configured to serve one or more first client devices according to a first network protocol, a second local network node configured to serve one or more second client devices according to a second network protocol different than the first network protocol, and a hub in operable communication with the first and second local network nodes over respective transport media. The hub contains a centralized network node configured to generate a first digitized radio frequency (RF) stream to the first local network node and a second digitized RF stream to the second local network node. The first digitized RF stream corresponds to the first network protocol and the second digitized RF stream corresponds to the second network protocol.

Abstract: A communication network includes an optical hub having a first coherent optics transceiver, a fiber node having a second coherent optics transceiver, an optical transport medium operably coupling the first coherent optics transceiver to the second coherent optics transceiver, a first optical circulator disposed at the optical hub, and a second optical circulator disposed at the fiber node. The first coherent optics transceiver is configured to (i) transmit a downstream optical signal at a first wavelength, and (ii) receive an upstream optical signal at the first wavelength. The second coherent optics transceiver is configured to (i) receive the downstream optical signal from the first coherent optics transceiver at the first wavelength, and (ii) transmit the upstream optical signal at the first wavelength. The first and second optical circulators are configured to separate the downstream optical signal from the upstream optical signal.

Abstract: An optical network communication system utilizes a passive optical network (PON) and includes an optical line terminal (OLT) having a downstream transmitter and an upstream receiver, and an optical network unit (ONU) having a downstream receiver and an upstream transmitter. The downstream transmitter is configured to provide a coherent downlink transmission, and the downstream receiver is configured to obtain one or more downstream parameters from the coherent downlink transmission. The system further includes a long fiber configured to carry the coherent downlink transmission between the OLT and the ONU. The ONU is configured to communicate to the OLT a first upstream ranging request message, the OLT is configured to communicate to the ONU a first downstream acknowledgement in response to the upstream first ranging request message, and the ONU is configured to communicate to the OLT a second upstream ranging request message based on the first downstream acknowledgement.

Abstract: A coherent optical transmitter is in operable communication with an optical fiber an includes a plurality of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) configured to (i) receive a plurality of radio frequency analog input signals, respectively, and (ii) convert the received plurality of RF analog input signals into a plurality of respective digital data streams. The transmitter further includes a source laser configured to output at least two orthogonal polarization component signals, and at least two polarization modulators configured to modulate (i) an in-phase portion output from a first ADC, (ii) an in-quadrature portion output from a second ADC, and (iii) one polarization component signal of the at least two orthogonal polarization component signals. The transmitter further includes a polarization beam combiner configured to (i) multiplex the respective outputs of the at least two polarization modulators, and (ii) transmit the multiplexed output from the polarization beam combiner to the optical fiber.

Abstract: An echo cancellation method includes steps of (a) extracting phase-distortion estimates, (b) reconstructing an echo signal, (c) generating a clean signal, and (d) producing a primary signal. Step (a) includes extracting, from a first phase signal, a plurality of phase-distortion estimates, the first phase signal having been estimated from an echo-corrupted signal received at a first coherent transceiver of a coherent optical network. Step (b) includes reconstructing an echo signal from the plurality of phase-distortion estimates and a transmitted signal transmitted by the first coherent transceiver. Step (c) includes generating a clean signal as a difference between the reconstructed echo signal and the first phase signal. Step (d) includes producing a primary signal by mapping each of a plurality of clean-phase estimates of the clean signal to one of a plurality of constellation symbols associated with a modulation scheme of the primary signal.
