    摘要: A liquid crystal display of the invention comprises an in-plane switching liquid crystal panel containing a liquid crystal layer whose alignment orientation changes according to an electric field in parallel with a surface of a substrate; a first polarizing plate and a second polarizing plate disposed sandwiching the liquid crystal panel therebetween; a first optical film inserted between the first polarizing plate and the liquid crystal panel; and a second optical film inserted between the second polarizing plate and the liquid crystal panel, wherein the first optical film includes: a retardation film A1 having a relation of nz>nx≧ny; and a retardation film B having an in-plane retardation (Re) in the range of from 200 to 300 nm, a relation of nx>nz>ny and satisfying Nz coefficient in the range of 0.3 nx≧ny; and the slow axis of the retardation film B is in parallel with or perpendicular to the absorption axes of the first and second polarizing plates. The liquid crystal display has a high contrast ratio over a wide range.

    摘要: An optically compensatory polarizer has a polarizer and an optically compensating film. The polarizer includes an absorption type polarizing element and transparent protective layers provided on opposite sides of the absorption type polarizing element, each of the transparent protective layers exhibiting an in-plane retardation of not larger than 10 nm and a thicknesswise retardation in a range of from 30 to 70 nm. The optically compensating film is laminated on one or each of opposite surfaces of the polarizer so that a slow axis of each optically compensating film crosses an absorption axis of the polarizer perpendicularly, and exhibits an in-plane retardation in a range of from 80 to 200 nm and Nz=(nx−nz)/(nx−ny) in a range of from −0.2 to 0.2 and nx and ny satisfy the relation nx>ny.

The light emitting side of the plane light source device and the visual recognition side of the LCD panel are bonded to each other through an adhesive layer having a refractive index lower than that of the light pipe.

The transparent film including light exit means which are constituted by concave or convex portions and which are arranged partially like pits in one of opposite surfaces of the transparent film so as to face at least one virtual center formed in one place located on or outside a layer thickness surface at an end of the transparent film, each concave or convex portion having a length of not larger than 200 &mgr;m and a depth or height of not larger than 50 &mgr;m, each of the light exit means having an optical path changing slope inclined to the film surface of the transparent film at an inclination angle in a range of from 35 to 48 degrees, and an elevational face inclined to the film surface at an inclination angle of not lower than 50 degrees. A liquid-crystal display device is constituted by a liquid-crystal display panel and the optical film, the optical film being disposed on one of opposite surfaces of the liquid-crystal display panel so that a surface of the optical film in which the light exit means are provided is located outward.
