A method for positioning a user equipment includes receiving (1302) positioning assistance data associated with one or more frequency layers from a network, determining (1304) measurement gap information for one or more bands associated with the one or more frequency layers, determining (1306) a number of available positioning reference signals for each of the one or more bands based on the positioning assistance data and the measurement gap information, measuring (1308) one or more positioning reference signals for a selected band, wherein the selected band is based on the number of available positioning reference signals in a measurement gap, and computing (1310) location information based at least in part on one or more positioning reference signal measurements.

In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) receives, from a network entity, a positioning reference signal (PRS) configuration indicating a pattern of PRS resources transmitted by at least one network node, and transmits a proposed measurement gap pattern to a serving network node, the proposed measurement gap pattern enabling the UE to measure at least a subset of PRS resources transmitted by each of the at least one network node, the proposed measurement gap pattern determined based on the pattern of PRS resources.

Abstract: Positioning for user equipments (UEs) in a wireless network is supported by restricting position reference signal (PRS) configuration parameters for a Transmission Reception Point (TRP) based on PRS configuration used by co-located TRPs. The PRS configuration parameters for the TRP may be restricted by restricting orthogonality of the PRS resources with respect to PRS resources from co-located TRPs to only code division multiplexing, and other types of orthogonality such as time division multiplexing and frequency divisional multiplexing are not permitted for co-located TRPs. The PRS configuration parameters for the TRP may be restricted to the same muting sequence type, e.g., inter-instance and/or intra-instance muting, as used by co-located TRPs. The PRS configuration parameters, e.g., related to orthogonality and/or muting, are not restricted with respect to non-co-located TRPs. The restrictions on the PRS configuration parameters for a TRP may be determined by a central authority, such as a location server.

In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) receives assistance data for enabling the UE to estimate a location of the UE, the assistance data including a relative location of each of a plurality of transmission points, wherein the relative location is represented as a hierarchy of two or more levels of description, wherein a highest level of description is relative to a fixed reference point, receives, from each of at least a subset of the plurality of transmission points, at least one positioning reference signal, and estimates the location of the UE based on characteristics of reception of the at least one positioning reference signal from each of the subset of the plurality of transmission points and the two or more levels of description and the fixed reference point for each of the subset of the plurality of transmission points.

Abstract: A mobile device and base station are enabled to support improved positioning accuracy in the presence of phase noise in high frequency radio network, such as in 5G New Radio network operating in mmWave. Phase Tracking Reference Signal (PTRS) may be transmitted with Positioning Reference Signals (PRS) and used for positioning and/or used to correct the phase offset between symbols in the PRS. A request may be made to transmit PTRS alone or with the PRS, or that the PRS is transmitted with a specific PRS frame structure, e.g., with a specific comb value, that minimizes the impact of phase noise. The PTRS or a phase ramp of the staggered symbols in the PRS may be used to estimate and correct the phase offset. Less than all of the symbols transmitted in the PRS may be used to generate positioning measurements to minimize the impact of phase noise.

Abstract: The positioning capabilities of a User Equipment (UE) are stored in a core network to reduce positioning latency when the UE indicates that its positioning capabilities are stable and/or are long term valid. The UE may provide its positioning capabilities to a location server during a location session along with an indication of whether the positioning capabilities are stable. The location server may enable storage of the positioning capabilities for the UE in the core network, e.g., in the location server or another entity in the core network such as Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF), if there is an indication that the positioning capabilities are stable. The AMF may include a UE identifier in location requests with which the location server may retrieve the UE positioning capabilities if stored at the location server or may include the UE positioning capabilities if stored at the AMF.

Abstract: A user equipment (UE) configured for position determination receives positioning assistance data from a location server that is positioning method specific and provides information related to the prioritization of one or more of frequency layers, transmission points (TRPs), Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) resource sets, and PRS resources or a combination thereof. The positioning assistance data may be generated by the location server in response to the UE measurement capabilities. The UE determines a prioritization for PRS measurements based at least on one or more orderings of the information for the frequency layers, the TRPs, the PRS resource sets, or the PRS resources in the positioning assistance data, or a combination thereof and the positioning method. Downlink PRS are measured by the UE based on the prioritization.
