A multi-stage solid state amplifier emulates the distortion associated with grid current flow in a multi-stage tube amplifier by means of a clipping device in the circuit between each series connected stage. In a particular embodiment, each stage includes a field effect transistor (FET) and the clipping device is a diode.

A procedure for generating different variations of a sequence of symbols, such as a musical piece, based on the properties of a chaotic system--most notably, sensitive dependence on the initial condition--is described and demonstrated. This method preferably uses a fourth order Runge-Kutta implementation of a chaotic system. Bach's Prelude in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I serves as the illustrative example since it is well-known and easily accessible. Variations of the Bach can be heard that are very close to the original while others diverge further. The system is designed for composers who, having created a through-composed work or section, would like to further develop their musical material. The composer is able to interact with the system to select various versions and change them, if desired. Yet the compositional character of the variations remains within the artist's domain of style, expression and inventiveness. The procedure, however, is more generically applicable to other dynamic symbol sequences than music, as well.

There are provided an analyzer which processes a supplied original sound waveform signal so as to generate one or more analyzed waveform signal components, a synthesizer which receives and processes at least one of the analyzed waveform signal components from the analyzer so as to synthesize a waveform signal on the basis of the processing, and a control section which controls the respective parameters used in the analyzer and synthesizer independently of each other. At least output signal of the synthesizer is taken out and output as a tone signal. In order to achieve diversified control of the tone color or characteristic of a tone to be generated, a tone signal may be obtained by taking out the respective output signals of the analyzer and synthesizer for synthesis.

A solid state amplifier for emulating the compression associated with an overbiased class-B push-pull tube amplifier at high input signal levels due to the flow of current into the grid of the output tubes resulting in a desirable output clipping characteristic with crossover distortion is disclosed. The invention includes at least one pair of class-B connected solid state devices, each having an input circuit and an output circuit. The output circuits are connected for mixing. A biasing element in the input circuit of each paired solid state device establishes a clipping level offset at the input circuit and at the output circuit of each device. A clipping element in the input circuit and the output circuit clips the offset at the input circuit and clips the offset at the output circuit of each respective solid state device. A charging element overbiases the offset in the input circuit whenever the input signal is greater than the input clipping element. The overbiasing causes crossover distortion for emulating the desirable compression associated with a tube amplifier.

A musical tone synthesizing apparatus comprises a digital signal processor (i.e., DSP), a main memory and a sub memory. The main memory stores main instructions, while the sub memory stores sub instructions. In accordance with the main instructions and the sub instructions, the DSP performs several kinds of arithmetical operations in a time-division manner. Herein, the main instructions embody algorithms representing a sound source which contains a non-linear table. The contents of the non-linear table represents a non-linear characteristic of a musical instrument to be simulated. Values to be stored in the non-linear table are calculated in accordance with a predetermined mathematical computation utilizing a series expansion, a recurrence formula and the like. By rewriting the contents of the non-linear table, a non-linear characteristic to be applied to musical tone signals is altered in real time. Incidentally, the sub instructions are used to perform several kinds of operations such as an operation of rewriting the contents of the non-linear table and/or a low-pass filtering operation.

A musical tone waveform signal generating apparatus in which a waveform signal is circulated to generate a musical tone waveform signal. The apparatus includes an excitation portion for mixing an excitation control signal with the waveform signal and for non-linearly converting the mixed waveform signal and a signal transmission portion coupled with the excitation portion to feed back the converted waveform signal to the excitation portion with delay of a predetermined time for causing on the converted waveform signal a resonance frequency corresponding with a pitch of a musical tone to be generated. In the excitation portion, the non-linear conversion of the mixed waveform signal is effected by a plurality of non-linear tables to generate various kinds of musical tone waveform signals, and the converted waveform signal is controlled by a tone color control signal to simulate the musical tone as a natural musical tone created by performance of a musical instrument such as a wind instrument, a brass-wind instrument, a stringed instrument or the like.

A distortion synthesizer, having a first distortion circuit, a tone control circuit for altering the tonality of the first distorted signal and a second distortion circuit for introducing harmonics into said tone controlled signal. At least one of the distortion circuits introduces harmonics without clipping. The second distortion circuit also for clips the resultant signal as a function of said resultant signal. The first distortion circuit limits and introduces even harmonics, preferrably predominantly second harmonics. The second distortion circuit introduces odd harmonics, preferrably by predominantly third harmonics, prior to clipping, and also compress the signal. The distortion circuits include a variable gain stage which increases with increased input using a plurality of switches which progressively add parallel resistors to progressively increase output current. A circuit simulating transformer saturation is also provided in the second distortion circuit.

A musical tone waveform signal generating apparatus is used to generate the waveform signal full of variety which simulates the sound waveform of wind instrument. This apparatus provides a loop including first and second signal lines through which the waveform signal is circulated. Both of first and second signal lines are connected to a conversion portion which receives the waveform signal from the second signal line and a musical tone control signal which is used to control a musical parameter of a musical tone to be generated. The conversion portion effects the predetermined non-linear conversion on the waveform signal in response to the musical tone control signal so that a converted waveform signal to be obtained from the conversion portion is to be outputted to the first signal line. A transmission portion to which both of first and second signal lines are connected transmits the waveform signal from the first signal line to the second signal line and delays the waveform signal by a delay time corresponding to a pitch of the musical tone to be generated. Further, a signal loop portion inserted between the conversion portion and transmission portion mixes the waveform signals on first and second signal lines by transmitting the waveform signal on one of first and second signal lines to the other of first and second signal lines.

A preamplifier for audio frequecy electrical signals generated by a musical instrument such a guitar having distortion characteristics simulating those of a vacuum tube amplifier. A solid state amplifier has an input for receiving electrical signals generated by the musical instrument and has an output for providing an output signal. Circuitry asymmetrically clips the output signal to provide as the output signal a nonlinear asymmetrically clipped signal having harmonic content which varies as a function of the amplitude and duration of the received electrical signals. The clipped signal has musically desirable harmonic overtones and produces different tonal responses simulating the characteristics of an overdriven vacuum tube amplifier.
