Abstract:
The method of making a tubular pultruded member having a longitudinal axis and a substantially uniform wall thickness throughout includes providing a heated die with a mandrel extending through the forming die section and a bath of liquid polymer, simultaneously pulling continuous reinforcing fibers and at least one carrier tape with wall spacers through the liquid polymer bath around the mandrel and into and through the heated die to shape and cure the liquid polymer into a tubular pultruded member, the wall spacers having a thickness equal to the uniform distance between the outside surface of the mandrel and the inside surface of the die.
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for improving signal detection and tracking in underwater acoustic devices receiving a set of acoustic pulses propagated in response to repetitive synchronizing events. Each of the set of pulses is correlated with a replica of each pulse in a receiver in the underwater devices during an associated time window. The correlated output of the receiver is compared to an adjustable threshold characteristic in a detector for selection of the actual pulse according to predetermined criteria for each of the set of pulses. An actual time of reception relative to the synchronizing event is assigned to the selected pulse. Previous actual times of reception are used to estimate the expected time of reception of the associated pulse relative to the next synchronizing event. The estimate is used to adjust the associated time window to encompass the expected time of reception. Previous actual times of reception are compared to corresponding estimated times of reception to develop a measure of the quality of the estimates. The shape of the threshold characteristic and the width of the associated time window are adjusted as a function of the measure of the quality. A preferred threshold characteristic has a parabolic shape with its vertex defining a minimum threshold level at the expected time of reception. High quality measures lower the minimum threshold and narrow the parabola and the time window; low quality measures raise the minimum threshold level and broaden the parabola and the time window. Adaptive signal tracking is thereby provided.
Abstract:
A pocket wheel furnace having a furnace housing provided with a heat source in the side walls to project heat upon the components requiring heat treatment. The components are loaded into the pockets on the wheel at a first station and travel through the projected heat for the time needed to reach the heat treatment temperature before reaching a discharge station where the components are moved to a quench station. The travel time in the furnace is predetermined and is substantially equivalent for all components in a batch thereof.
Abstract:
A protective garment includes a wire mesh portion made from a wire material comprising a plurality of loosely interlinked metal wire rings, and at least one helically coiled stiffening element which is interwoven through a plurality of the metal wire rings in the wire mesh portion for maintaining the latter in a predetermined orientation. The garment can be effectively embodied as a protective glove which includes a wire mesh cuff portion having a plurality of helically coiled stiffening elements interwoven therein to maintain the cuff portion in a predetermined form.

Abstract:
An apparatus for removing the contents of a can which uses a conventional can opener having a triangularly shaped outside edge forward portion for opening a can. Positioned on the front of the can opener near the outside edge is an opening air sealing device whereby as the outside edge forward portion makes an opening in the can the opening air sealing device closes the opening. An air pressurizing device in the form of a squeeze bulb and a conduit defining a passageway are attached to the can opener and the conduit defining a passageway is positioned through the opening air sealing device at one end of the air pressurizing device and the conduit is connected to the squeeze bulb at the other end of the air pressurizing device. After the top of the can is removed, the apparatus is pressed downwardly onto the bottom of the can thereby making a hole in the bottom of the can, the hole being sealed by the opening air sealing device such that the conduit extends through the opening air sealing device into the inside of the can. Air is pressurized in the can by the air pressurizing device and flows through the conduit into the bottom of the can thereby forcing the contents of the can to be pushed out through the top of the can.
Abstract:
A container having an externally threaded pour spout on which an internally threaded cap is screwed. A tamper-proof, removable, membrane-like or diaphragm-like closure for the spout is secured to the circumferential lip of the spout with a peelable seal. The membrane-like closure has an elongated pull tab extending therefrom, by pulling on which the closure may be peeled off the end of the spout. The external threads on the spout are interrupted so as to provide a groove in which the pull tab resides out of engagement or interference with the external and internal threads on the spout and cap.
Abstract:
Apparatus for inserting and removing several filters from an optical path and for determining at all times the instantaneous positional relationship of each filter with respect to the optical path includes a set of filters mounted on a carrier which is attached to a resonant piezoelectric system, and further includes reference tracks also located on the carrier and extending in the direction of the oscillatory motion and including a sequence of binary indicia progressing in the direction of the oscillatory motion. The reference tracks are read optically to produce a series of binary electrical signals which are processed to yield the instantaneous position of the carrier and filters with respect to a fixed optical path.
