    摘要: Techniques for automatically disambiguating a term with multiple meanings are provided. Term disambiguation is based on both training data and the contents of the body of text in which the term occurs. Once the contextual meaning of a term has been determined, metadata associated with that term can be used to narrow the scope of an automated search. Consequently, documents that contain the term in a context other than the context of the body of text can be excluded from search results. User interface elements may be associated with selected key terms in a web page. User interface elements associated with key terms may be associated with the contextual meanings of those key terms. When such an element is activated, metadata associated with the meaning of the corresponding key term may be submitted to a search engine, which can use the metadata to focus a search for pertinent documents.

    摘要: Techniques for providing information about “offline” content are provided. In one technique, content (e.g., televised or paper-printed content) is “tagged” with a service-associated icon and a keyword. A person seeing the icon in the content may submit the keyword to the service via his web browser. The service responsively submits search-limiting criteria, associated with the keyword, as query terms to a search engine. The search engine determines relevant web pages based on the query terms, dynamically generates search results and returns the search results to either the web browser or the service, which may dynamically generate and send to the web browser another web page containing the search results. Due to the automatic addition of the search-limiting criteria to the query terms, the set of web pages that the search engine determines to be relevant is narrower and more focused than the set otherwise would be.

    摘要: The present invention relates to the field of data processing, and particularly to a software system and associated method for use with a search engine. The engine searches data maintained in systems that are linked together over an associated network such as the Internet. More specifically, this invention pertains to a computer software product for determining, comparing, and representing the similarity between documents using a drag and drop Graphical User Interface (GUI) within a dynamically generated list of document identifiers. The invention uses this drag and drop GUI interface for convenient selection of document identifiers for further comparison. Then processing of a similarity analysis request using a configurable similarity algorithm is executed; this processing can be done on the client, proxy or server side. When the comparison process is completed, the GUI presents the similarity result of the comparison process as a Venn Diagram to show the level of similarity between the selected documents.

    摘要: A method for automatically limiting access of a client computer to data objects accessed through a server computer dynamically prevents robots or webcrawlers from obtaining too much of the server database and from dramatically reducing server performance. The method includes the steps of receiving a request for a data object, recording a log entry for the request, calculating client request values, and refusing the request if a client request value exceeds one of a set of corresponding predefined maximum request values. Each log entry contains a client identifier, timestamp, and at least one data object identifier for the request. The client request values preferably include a request frequency, which is compared with a predefined maximum request frequency, and a cumulative data request, which is compared with a data access threshold. If the client is refused access, the client identifier is added to a deny list, and future requests from the client are automatically denied. The calculated cumulative data request may be for a single client, or it may be for all clients, in order to detect a robot that is divided among multiple client identifiers. The cumulative data request check may consider the total percentage of server resources being given away, or a pattern in the requests. Also provided is a data protection system containing a log file, a request analyzer, and a dynamically-generated deny list. Requests to the server are intercepted and sent to the data protection system first.

    摘要: A computer program product is provided as a session search system and associated method that provide a novel type of query referred to as “session query”. In the context of a session query, a user issues a search query using, for example, a web-based form. This query is processed immediately by the search engine, yielding search result elements that are returned within the new context of a “dynamic search result set”. As long as the user is reviewing the “dynamic search result set” of the session query, the search result is updated automatically in almost real-time, when new information arrives. When the user is no longer interested in continuing the search, the session query is terminated. The session search system generally includes two modules: A client module that presents the “dynamic search result set” to the user, and a server module that manages the current set of active session queries. The client module implements an executable code in the user's web browser.
