An electric power steering apparatus provides a steering power assist of a motor to the steering system of an associated automotive vehicle, so as to reduce necessary steering power to be applied by a driver. The steering apparatus includes an attenuation device in the form of a phase delay circuit or an active low-pass filter, which is provided in a feedback loop connecting a motor current detector and a control section of a control unit constituting the vehicle steering system. By the attenuation device attenuating relatively high frequency components of motor current detected by the motor current detector, there is achieved a high-performance electric power steering apparatus which is capable of reducing noise in the feedback loop, without affecting the motor current, to a sufficient degree to highly improve a response to a driver's steering operation.

An electrically operated power steering apparatus basically has a steering torque sensor, a steering rotational speed sensor, and preferably a vehicle sensor. A controller outputs a motor control signal based on a steering torque, a steering rotational speed, and a vehicle speed which are detected by the steering torque sensor, the steering rotational speed sensor, and the vehicle sensor, respectively. The motor control signal is applied to control a motor driver to output a motor drive signal which energizes an electric motor to produce an assistive steering force or a braking force. The electrically operated power steering apparatus is effective to improve steering and returning characteristics of a steering system, and give the steering system a stable steering capability.

A first shaft and a second shaft are rotatably supported by a casing in a mutually parallel but offset manner, and an intermediate member is interposed between mutually opposing axial ends of these shafts. The intermediate member transmits torque from the first shaft to the second shaft, but the intermediate member is radially slidable relative to the first shaft and is engaged with a radially offset point of the second shaft. Because the distance between the axial center line of the first shaft and the point of engagement between the intermediate member and the second shaft changes with the angular displacement of the first shaft, a desired nonlinear property can be accomplished between the angular displacements of the first shaft and the second shaft. This property can be used for achieving a desired variable gear ratio suitable for the steering device. Further, the mutual sliding movement between the first shaft and the intermediate shaft in the radial direction accommodates such a relationship, and it can be achieved in a dimensionally accurate and play free manner because the movements of the moveable members strictly consist of rotational movements of circular members and simple linear movements. Roller bearings and ball bearings should be used in various parts to minimize plays.

The control signal generating circuit receives a corrected steering speed component from the correcting mechanism and adds the corrected steering speed component to the steering torque component for generating the control signals including the corrected steering speed component.

A motor driver controls the electric motor based on the motor control signal.
