Abstract:
A rotary atomizing electrostatic coating apparatus includes a plurality of paint nozzles and a solvent nozzle. Each paint nozzle communicates uniquely with a respective paint source separate by respective paint passages which are pathwise separate from each other. In each paint passage, a respective paint valve is installed. When changing a painting color according to the present invention, the paint filling the operating paint nozzle and the paint passage connected thereto is not washed out by a washing solvent, so that the amount of paint wasted when changing the painting color is decreased to substantially zero and the working time period for changing the painting color is also shortened. A corresponding method of use of such an apparatus is also disclosed which reduces the amount of paint wasted and the amount of solvent used during a step of switching from a first paint to a second paint.

A system for atomizing and dispensing powder comprises a fluidized powder bed for entraining the powder fluidized in a bearing air stream, a dispenser, and a motor for rotating the dispenser. The dispenser has a somewhat bell-shaped interior. The motor has an output shaft having a first passageway extending lengthwise thereof. A feed tube extends through the first passageway. The fluidized powder is fed to an end of the feed tube passageway remote from the dispenser to be supplied through the feed tube to the interior as the motor rotates the dispenser. A diffuser is mounted within the interior. A discharge slot is defined between the dispenser and an edge of the diffuser. The feed tube is mounted so that it does not rotate with the output shaft. The diffuser includes a back side facing the interior and bounded by the edge. The back side includes a generally part-spherical concavity into which the fluidized powder is directed from the feed tube.

A golf ball has a surface uniformly covered with a paint coat so that carrying properties of dimples can be stably elicited. A paint to which is applied a voltage of more than 50,000 V is supplied to a disk revolving at a speed of more than 15,000 rpm for atomization, the atomized paint being coated on the surface of the golf ball to form a paint coat within a thickness range of 5 to 60 .mu.m, with a maximum/minimum coat thickness ratio of 1 to 2.

Electrostatic liquid spray coating apparatus including a rotary atomizing cup of insulative material driven by an air turbine, is provided with a semi-conductive charging device extending through the cup, the inner portion of which is proximate the inner surface of the cup for contact charging liquid coating material supplied to the rear of the cup as it flows forwardly and outwardly over the rotating cup interior and contacts the charging device prior to atomization at the forward edge of the cup. A generally cylindrical insulative support body, housing a turbine and its associated air bearing and cup drive shaft, has a reduced diameter intermediate section which provides an annular cavity in which are located liquid coating and solvent valves for controlling the flow of liquid coating and solvent to the cup. The charging means in the cup is energized via a stationary conductor which terminates in closely spaced proximity to the outer portion of the charging device on the cup exterior which is electrically connected to the inner portion of the charging device on the cup interior via a series of semi-conductive posts which form the portion of the charging device extending through the wall of the cup between its inner and outer surfaces.

A robot painting system for electrostatically painting an automobile body that includes a paint module adapted to maintain the automobile body in a stationary position relative to at least two painting robots, each of which carries a rotary bell-type atomizing device and provides programmed movement thereof about five control axes at a speed which prevents the cone-shaped pattern of atomized paint particles from being distorted due to any gyroscopic effect developed by the atomizing device as it is moved about the control axes.

Method and apparatus for continuously producing emulsions with particles of a disperse phase liquid in a continuous phase liquid, employing an emulsifying vessel which is interiorly provided with a gravitative flow surface and a feeder for supplying the continuous phase liquid to the flow surface for forming thereon a stream of the continuous phase liquid. On the other hand, disposed within the emulsifying vessel is a rotary atomizing head which is connected to a disperse phase liquid source and a rotational drive means and maintained at a high voltage to stratify and form a spray of atomized particles of the disperse phase liquid flying toward the flow surface under the influence of centrifugal force and electrostatic action. The disperse phase particles from the rotary atomizing head are entrained and dispersed in the stream of the continuous phase liquid on the flow surface of the emulsifying vessel to form an emulsion. The resulting emulsion is collected in a receptacle. In some cases, the emulsifier is provided with a hot steam feed pipe for feeding hot steam to the rotary atomizing head to prevent solidification of atomized disperse phase particles on the atomizing head.

An electrostatic coating machine comprises a coating machine main body having a rotary atomizing head and a cleaning shroud, a plurality of color change valve mechanisms for feeding paints and cleaning fluids to the rotary atomizing head, a first change-over valve provided at a position close to the rotary atomizing head, paint feed passages respectively connected to each of the color change valve mechanisms and selectively communicating with the rotary atomizing head by way of the first change-over valve, a drain passage for recovering the drainage from the cleaning shroud and the first change-over valve, a discharging section for forcively discharging the drainage from the drain passage, and a second change-over valve provided in the midway of the drain passage communicating from the cleaning shroud to the discharging section. The cleaning shroud, the first and second change-over valves are disposed in a high voltage section that takes the same potential as that for the rotary atomizing head when a high voltage is applied to the rotary atomizing head, whereas each of color change valve mechanisms and the discharging section are disposed on the side of the ground. The method of changing color of paints using the foregoing electrostatic coating machine is also disclosed.
