The waveguide has an end-portion (49) adjacent the narrow end of the cone, the impedance of an inner wall (48) of which is modified by the inclusion of, in one embodiment, a dielectric sleeve (47) of thickness between/6 and/4 relative to propagation in the sleeve at a mean value of the upper of the two bands concerned. The sleeve helps to provide a rationally substantially symmetric illumination of the subreflector in said upper frequency band and, when used used with a parabolic main reflector, a similarly symmetric illumination of the main reflector also. The sleeve may be replaced by a series of grooves formed in the inner wall of the waveguide end-portion, these grooves being nominally/4 deep.

A compact high efficiency waveguide feed for reflector antennas includes a dielectric loaded aperture at its end for radiating energy to the reflector. The feed comprises a circular waveguide that carries the dominant TE11 mode, and terminates in a dielectric rod with an end cap. The exposed length of the dielectric rod between the end cap and the waveguide end constitutes a cylindrical aperture that radiates towards the reflector. The end cap and dielectric aperture dimensions are optimized for reflector high efficiency. Its small diameter provides an extremely compact feed, which reduces the sidelobes and operates well with both deep and shallow reflectors. As a result, high efficiency and low sidelobe performance can be obtained with symmetric centre fed reflectors.

A primary radiator is provided which can be used in an attenna to be mounted in an artificial satellite. In particular, the primary radiator is designed to prevent an electrical charge caused by charged particles in a space environment. In the conventional type of radiator, there typically has been no arrangement for preventing such electrical charge which may cause a short-circuited condition resulting in providing noise or communication difficulties. In order to prevent this electrical charging, a fine metallic conductor is passed from the central part of a sub-reflector through an axial central part where an influence for the electromagnetic field is minimal within the circular waveguide constituting the primary radiator. The conductor is then connected to ground in a DC form at a rectangular and circular converter of the primary radiator. With such a construction, since the metallic conductor is crossed at a right angle with an electric field of a dominant mode for transmitting within the waveguide, less disturbance of electromagnetic field is found, and further the metallic conductor may act to prevent the electrical charging.
