A video decompression system includes block error concealment means for generating substitute data for lost blocks of pixel data. An interpolator generates both spatially and temporally interpolated or predicted blocks of data for concealing a lost block. Pixel data in the respective blocks of spatially and interpolated data are transformed to coefficients representing frequency spectra. A substitute block of coefficients is assembled from coefficients from both the transformed blocks, according to a predetermined criteria. The substitute block is transformed back to the spatial domain for substitution of lost pixel values.

A digital time base corrector reduces the capacity of a memory to approximately a 1 H of image data while maintains the interleave relationship between a luminance signal and a chrominance signal of a video signal. Polarity data indicating the polarity of a burst signal is generated every 1 H, and a latch circuit is provided for holding and outputting the polarity data during a period of reading image data and polarity data from an image data memory and a sub-carrier phase memory, corresponding to the 1 H in which the polarity data was generated. When dropout occurs in a video signal, the image data and the polarity data are inhibited from being written into the image data memory and the sub-carrier phase memory. When discrepancy is detected between read polarity data and polarity data held in the latch circuit, the color phase of the read image data is inverted.

A laser video disk master is operated at 2.times. speed for duplicating video information to be recorded in VHS format. Two last disk video players are modified to operate in synchronism in order to multiplex from one to the other in duplicating video programs of length equal to the two recorded disks. The 2.times. frequency NTSC format video output signal is then demodulated, drop out detection is performed, and the digitally-encoded stereo audio information is separated, error corrected, and converted by digital to analog (D/A) conversion to left and right channels of stereo analog information. The left and right channels of audio information are presented simultaneously to an FM modulator for presentation to rotating video heads and to a 2.times. Dolby processor for presentation to linear heads. The demodulated 2.times. video information is converted to digital information by an analog to digital (A/D) converter and then time-base corrected and drop out compensated. New sync and blanking signals in digital form are switched into the digitized video signal, and digital color-under chroma processing and digital luminance noise reduction processing are performed. The 2.times. composite time base corrected and color-under processed video signal is then D/A converted to analog form for 2.times. speed duplication of VHS cassette copies. With suitable buffering, the signal may be presented to a bank of VHS recorders.

A method of reproducing video signals from a magnetic recording medium like a magnetic tape for a VTR to obtain high-quality video pictures even when dropouts occur in the medium, which includes the steps of separating synchronizing information from the video signals reproduced from the magnetic recording medium, detecting a dropout duration from the reproduced video signals, generating complete synchronizing information during a whole period of writing the signals in image information memories by compensating lost synchronizing information during the dropout, generating write address signals on the basis of the generated synchronizing information, writing reproduced video signals the memories on the basis of the generated write address signals while no dropout occurs, and leaving unchanged previously written video signals while a dropout occurs. According to an apparatus implementing the above method, reproduced pictures of high quality are obtained without jitters and skews due to dropouts.

A video signal processing apparatus and method are provided in which time base errors in the luminance and color signals of a video signal reproduced from a recording medium are compensated. Time base errors in the luminance signal are reduced by storing the luminance signal in a first memory in response to a write clock singal synchronized with the video signal and subsequently reading the luminance signal from the memory in response to a first read clock signal synchronized with a stable clock signal. Time base errors in the color signal are reduced by writing the color signal in a second memory in response to the write clock signal and subsequently reading the color signal from the second memory in response to a second read clock signal synchronized with the stable clock signal such that corresponding portions of the luminance signal and the color signal are read from the first and second memories at different respective times with a predetermined time difference therebetween.

In a VTR for a TCI signal, time-base correction and TCI decode processing are applied to the reproduced TCI signal of each channel and also to the corresponding dropout signals. According to the resulting dropout signal for luminance signal and the dropout signal for chrominance signal, the dropout section of a luminance signal and the dropout section of a chrominance signal are respectively compensated for. As a result, a luminance signal may have the data of the dropout section compensated for with data of a highly correlated luminance signal of 1H before and 1H after the horizontal period where dropout occurs. The dropout compensation circuits can be simplified since the luminance and chrominance signals are processed by separate circuits.

In a record mode, a record video signal applied to an input terminal is separated into a luminance signal and a color signal by a comb filter made up of a 1H delay line, an adder circuit and a subtraction circuit. In a playback mode, the reproduced luminance signal and color signal are added together in an adder circuit, thereby to form a video signal. This video signal is applied to the comb filter through switches and then is separated into a luminance signal and a color signal.
