摘要:
A modular device, that includes an operation event log in respective modules of the device to record time-stamped events, e.g., errors, and a configuration log in a central controller to keep track of changing configurations due to swapping or removal of modules. A controller updates the configuration log each time a module is added to or removed from the device. Log information may be stored locally with the device or in a remote server accessible via a network to facilitate remote diagnostics. To assist in diagnostics, the disclosed method includes merging the configuration and events logs in a way to display log entries according to a selected configuration where errors in current modules are demarcated. The apparatus includes routines in the controller to effect retrieval, processing, and display of demarcated events according to a selected configuration.

A method of developing a job for output with an output subsystem is provided. The method includes generating a first electronic representation of a first image at a first time, reading a subset of placemarking instructions at a second time, generating a second representation of a second image at a third time, wherein the second time is after the first time but before the third time. At a fourth time, which fourth time is after the first, second and third times, a selected function is performed relative to a third electronic representation of a third image in response to the reading of the subset of placemaking instructions.

There is provided a scheduling apparatus for a printing system, the scheduling apparatus including a memory for storing a set of two or more feed signals, the set of feed signals including a first feed signal and a second feed signal with the first feed signal and the second feed signal corresponding respectively with a special sheet and an imagable regular substrate having opposing sides. The scheduling apparatus further includes a controller for generating the first and second feed signals. The controller, which communicates with each of a print engine and a special sheet insertion apparatus determines whether the imagable regular substrate is to imaged on both of the opposing sides and, when it is determined that the imagable regular substrate is to be imaged on both the opposing sides, the controller schedules the first and second feed signals to be transmitted respectively to the print engine and the special sheet insert apparatus during a single pitch.

A special sheet handling apparatus is provided for use with a printing system, the printing system including a print engine. The special sheet handling apparatus includes a special sheet insertion path operatively coupled with the print engine. Substrates, each having a stock orientation and being imaged with the print engine, are delivered to the special sheet insertion path as output, while a special sheet, having a special sheet orientation, when disposed in the special sheet insertion path, is added to the output by the special sheet handling orientation. A processor determines whether the stock orientation is the same as the special sheet orientation. When the orientations are different, and the special sheet is invertible, the special sheet is inverted at an inverting station communicating with the special sheet insertion path.

A method is provided for producing prints in a printing machine having a marking engine operatively coupled with a finishing device, which finishing device normally requires productivity losses in the marking engine. The method includes the steps of: a) storing a first print job and a second print job; b) printing a first portion of the first print job; c) transmitting the printed first portion of the first print job to the finishing device; d) performing a finishing operation, at the finishing device, on the printed first portion of the first print job; e) during the step d), printing a portion of the second print job; f) transmitting the printed portion of the second print job to a print output area, the print output area being separate from the finishing device; and g) initiating printing of a second portion of the first print job, concurrent with step d), for reducing productivity losses in the marking engine.

A process for repairing common defects in the electronic page images of a print job being processed by an electronic reprographic system that includes a printer for producing prints from the digitized page images in response to job program instructions and a user interface (UI) with display screen for inputting job program instructions for each print job. The process uses document defect repair templates, either existing or created by the operator and stored in a system library, to electronically mask document defects in the page images. Additionally, the process is applicable before or after hardcopy original documents have been scanned by the reprographic system.

Printer job recovery for use in an electronic reprographic system includes the detection of faults affecting printer operation. If such a fault is detected, fault recovery is effected and operation continues. It is then determined whether the jobs are incomplete. If not, recovery is skipped and normal operation continues. If, however, it is determined that there are incomplete jobs, it is then determined whether there are any partially complete jobs. If not, normal system operation continues. Upon determination that there are partially complete jobs, the system recovers the oldest partially complete job. It is again determined whether there are any partially complete jobs. The cycle continues until it is determined that there are no partially complete jobs.

A plant stem is sealed aseptically by an initially imperforate, stem-penetrable elastomer which is sufficiently flowable and has sufficient self-affinity to form a seal against the stem which is sufficient to resist the flow of liquid around the stem at a pressure of about 0.9 to about 1.2 psi, and an elastomer is provided containing dispersed, suspended particles of a water-insoluble, hydroscopic polymer.

Productivity in electronic printer incorporating finishing activities and operating in a job streaming mode are enhanced by utilizing software to calculate and predict the minimum delay corresponding to minimum skip pitches) in successive jobs requiring finishing activities such as binding and stapling. Printing and collating of sets of original scanned documents are controlled so that collated sets are successively presented by the printer to the finisher nearly coincident with conclusion of the finishing activity being accomplished for a current job. Additional software innovations allow job scheduling for jobs involving complex pitch time delays created by scanning simplex and duplex documents returned in random order. For this case optimum delay time is the cumulative finishing hardware delays as well as imaging/paper path delays. Still another feature is a predictive algorithym which is used to increase reliability of printer components by cycling down the printer between jobs in situations where the finishing activity for a current job requires an extraordinarily long time to complete compared with the cycle down/cycle up time of the printer.

In copying or printing, proper printed copy sheets generated from the printing operation may be selectably operator directed to various different copy sheet output compiling stations, such as a stacking tray or a finisher compiler. Those copy sheets desired to be purged rather than provided as finished copies {called purge sheets below} are directed to a particlar designated such station for operator removal and disposal. Preferably this designated purge station is a readily operator accessible existing top tray. In this system, reduced printing delays are provided by continuing the printing process as long as the proper copy sheets are selectably directed to a copy sheet output compiling station which is not the same tray or station into which the purge sheets have been directed in the same printing operation, or, as long as the proper copy sheets will not be stacked on top of the purge sheets in that same tray. The printing operation of the copy sheets is automatically stopped to prevent such intermixing of the purged sheets with the proper copy sheets in the same output tray. However, this interrupted printing operation can then resume in response to sensing that all the sheets in that tray have been removed, which may be directed.
