A quickly responsive, dial-type clinical thermometer is provided to give fast, accurate and easily readable clinical temperatures. A temperature sensitive liquid is sealed in a sensing probe element and expands proportionately with a rise in temperature. The liquid in the probe communicates with an attached bellows which is flexed by the expanding liquid to actuate a dial indicator drivingly connected to the bellows. The indicator dial is graduated with temperature markings. A simple locking arrangement holds the indicator needle at the highest recorded temperature until reset by replacing a disposable sterile probe cover. Placement of a new cover over the probe tip automatically resets the indicator needle.

A thermometer having a first low boiling point or thermallyexpansive fluid within a probe and a second relatively incompressible fluid at the thermometer calibrations, the first fluid and the second fluid being in pressure communication with each other through an intermediate elastomeric or porous medium such as a diaphragm or a multiple capillary porcelain plug. Vapor pressure or thermal expansion of the first fluid in response to the temperature of the probe environment will move the second fluid proportionately through a calibrated capillary bore whereby the temperature-related pressure of the first fluid may be read in calibrations of temperature. In a preferred embodiment the first fluid is a gas or gas-liquid equilibrium and the second fluid is a substantially incompressible liquid.

A temperature responsive device for controlling the flow of fluid particularly for medical devices, such as a breathing apparatus and a vaporizer for anaesthetics, comprises a housing which has a supply inlet for the gas and includes a chamber at its lower end which is adapted to contain a liquid such as an anaesthetic. The interior of the housing defines a first pressure compensating passage for the gas in which a part of the inflow of the gas flows through a spiral around a top portion of the housing and then down to a lower spiral defined around the fluid chamber for the liquid, such as the anaesthetic. A second partial gas flow passage extends in the form of a by-pass from the inlet through a valve passage to the outlet. Flow from the fluid chamber to the discharge are regulated by means of two concentric rearranged movable valve members, the first valve member containing the expansible means which is located in the anaesthetic material includes a surface which is spaced from a valve surface of the second movable member and which defines the flow passage from the fluid chamber to the outlet. The second movable member defines a flow passage with a fixed portion of the housing and it is biased in a downward direction against the housing but is movable against this biasing pressure to vary the passage in the by-pass line. In addition, this same second movable member defines a surface which, together with the first movable member, defines the control passage from the fluid chamber to the outlet.

APPARATUS CAPABLE OF BEING IMMERSED INTO A MOLTEN STEEL BATH TO OBTAIN THE TEMPERATURE OF THE BATH AND THE CARBON CONTENT OF A SAMPLE THEREOF. THE APPARATUS IS A HOLLOW RECEPTACLE HAVING A CAVITY CAPABLE OF CAPABLE OF RETAINING AND COOLING A STEEL SAMPLE. THE CAVITY CONTAINS A THERMOCOUPLE WHICH RECORDS THE COOLING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STEEL SAMPLE AND ESPECIALLY THE LIQUIDUS ARREST TEMPERATURE CORRESPONDING TO A PHASE TRANSFORMATION OF THE SAMPLE. THE LIQUIDUS ARREST TEMPERATURE IS USED AS A MEASURE OF THE CARBON CONTENT OF THE STEEL BATH. A SECOND THERMOCOUPLE MAY BE USED TO RECORD THE BATH TEMPERATURE DIRECTLY. ALSO DESCRIBED ARE PROCESSES FOR CONTROLLING VARIOUS STEELMAKING AND REFINING PROCESSES, ESPECIALLY THE BASIC OXYGEN STEELMAKING PROCESS.
