To provide for reliable commutation of a single-strand or single-line winding (25) connected in the diagonal of a transistor bridge circuit (40, 40') having four transistors (70-73) which are alternately rendered conductive in accordance with a Hall-IC rotor position sensor (32) affected by the field of a permanent magnet rotor (13), time delay capacitors (64, 66; 87) are connected to charge current sources, for example high-resistance resistors (59, 63; 88, 90, 95) to delay turn-ON of respective transistors of the bridge permitting current flow through the winding in a first direction after commutation from the other transistors (71, 72) of the bridge which are being turned OFF or blocked, so that a finite time interval or gap of no current flow is provided to reliably prevent possible short-circuit currents across the power supply buses (44, 45) if the inherent switching characteristics of the transistors are longer than the commutation interval. The capacitors are connected to a rapid-discharge circuit, for example through diodes (62) or the inherent semiconductor, such as a transistor (54) in a Hall generator-integrated circuit combination. A first pair of complementary transistors with their collectors connected to one terminal of the motor winding are alternately switched on by a rectangular wave produced by a Hall-IC responding to the magnetic field of a permanent magnet rotor, the square wave being coupled to these transistors through a resistor network and series capacitors. At the same time, another pair of complementary transistors, having their emitters connected to the other terminal of the motor winding, is directly switched by the Hall-IC, so that they operate as voltage followers to complete the path of the current pulses of the winding through the other half of a full-bridge circuit. Thus, one signal from a single sensor of rotor position operates a stator winding with full protection of the components while using a minimum of circuit elements. Such a motor makes possible ventilating fans of small axial length for use in compact apparatus.

A first capacitor is discharged with every pulse of a train of pulses of a frequency proportional to the actual speed of a rotary machine under control and is charged up during intervals between these pulses. The voltage of the first capacitor provides a signal to a threshold circuit which operates to provide a second signal whenever the voltage of the first capacitor exceeds a predetermined voltage which may be set in order to set the speed at which the machine is to be controlled. During the presence of the second signal a second capacitor is charged, beginning at a predetermined voltage, preferably zero. The regulating magnitude for the machine to be controlled is derived from the voltage of the second capacitor either directly or indirectly through a controller circuit and a power stage. The circuit is particularly useful for control of the speed of machines that run slowly or can conveniently provide only relatively few speed-indicating pulses per revolution.

A permanent magnet motor designed for d-c operation with pulsed current supply through at least two, and preferably four or more stator coils, has a rotor magnetized such that, with respect to 180.degree.-electrical, about 120.degree. are magnetized in one magnetic polarity, and the remaining about 60.degree. are magnetized with dual polarity to provide a monopole zone of magnetization and a dipole zone of magnetization, a galvano-magnetic sensing element being exposed to the path of circumferential rotation in which the same polarities of the dipole and monopole zones are contiguous for control of pulse current flow through the windings of the motor. A tacho generator winding may additionally be included in the air gap, exposed only to the rotary path of one magnetic pole of the dipole zone and the monopole zone.
