Multiple field units in a CDMA system are synchronized for communication with a base station using shared forward and reverse link channels. In an illustrative embodiment, each field unit is assigned a time slot in a forward link channel to receive messages from the base station. Likewise, each field unit is assigned a time slot on a common reverse link channel for transmitting messages to the base station. Timing alignment and power level control among each of many field units and the base station is achieved by analyzing coded transmissions received at the base station in a corresponding time slot as transmitted by each field unit. The codes may be orthogonal, pseudonoise (PN), or other codes. The power level of forward control channel messages can thus be individually controlled. In this way, minimal resources are deployed to maintain communication and precise synchronization between a base station and each of multiple users, minimizing collisions between field units transmitting in adjacent time slots on the reverse link.

At the first device, a vector s representing L signals [s1 . . . sL] to be transmitted is processed with a transmit matrix A to maximize capacity of the channel between the first device and the second device subject to a power constraint that the power emitted by each of the N antennas is less than or equal to a maximum power. The power constraint for each antenna may be the same for all antennas or specific or different for each antenna. For example, the power constraint for each antenna may be equal to a total maximum power emitted by all of the N antennas combined divided by N. The transmit matrix A distributes the L signals [s1 . . . sL] among the N plurality of antennas for simultaneous transmission to the second device. At the second device, the signals received by the M plurality of antennas are processed with receive weights and the resulting signals are combined to recover the L signals.

An improved arrangement is described for maintaining throughput of data packets over a cellular packet network from an Internet server to an end user machine during handoff of a mobile subscriber unit from a first base station to a second base station. The end user machine conventionally generates, in response to successive bytes from the server, acknowledgment signals including where applicable a “zero” acknowledgment signal that advertises a closed receive window at the end user machine and that is effective to pause transmission of data from the server. In response to a handoff start signal from the subscriber unit, a gateway unit associated with the first base station sends to the server a simulated zero acknowledgment signal to pause such transmission. Upon completion of handoff, an actual non-zero acknowledgment signal stored at the gateway unit at the start of handoff is applied to the server to resume transmission from the server to the end user machine.

The present invention provides for making code rate adjustments and modulation type adjustments in a pseudonoise (PN) encoded CDMA system. Coding rate adjustments may be made by changing the number of information bits per symbol, or Forward Error Code (FEC) coding rate. A forward error correction (FEC) block size is maintained at a constant amount. Therefore, as the number of information bits per symbol are increased, an integer multiple of bits per epoch is always maintained. The scheme permits for a greater flexibility and selection of effective data rates providing information bit rates ranging from, for example, approximately 50 kilobits per second to over 5 mega bits per second (Mbps) in one preferred embodiment.

A transmit matrix of weights is computed from signals transmitted by a second communication device and received at a plurality of antennas of the first communication device. The transmit matrix processing includes normalizing a transmit weight vector with respect to a mode of the transmit weight associated with one of the plurality of antennas. The processed transmit matrix is then applied to a transmit signal to produce a plurality of transmit signals to be simultaneously transmitted from corresponding ones of the plurality of antennas of the first communication device.
