In various embodiments, the present invention includes a rupture control system comprising an inner hose, an outer hose, and a valve that is actuated by fluid leaking from the inner hose. The inner hose and the outer hose define a containment passageway therebetween, and the valve includes an inlet, an outlet, a passageway extending between the inlet and the outlet, a valve member readily movable between a first position and a second position, and a valve control chamber. In these embodiments, a rupture in the inner hose places the inner hose in fluid communication with the containment passageway and the valve control chamber, and fluid flowing into the valve control chamber moves the valve member from its first position into its second position, the valve member at least partially blocking the valve passageway in the second position.

A hose fault detection system includes a hose assembly including a hose having first and second conductive layers. The hose assembly has an electrical characteristic. A fault detector is in electrical communication with the first and second conductive layers. The fault detector includes an indicator operatively connected to the hose assembly. A method for monitoring the structural integrity of a hose assembly includes providing a fault detection system having a hose assembly including a hose having a first conductive layer and a second conductive layer. The hose assembly has an electrical characteristic. The electrical characteristic of the hose assembly is compared to a threshold value. A visual indicator in operative communication with the hose assembly is illuminated when the electrical characteristic goes beyond the threshold value.

An integrated leak detection system for a rotating union provides improved leak detection and user convenience. In an embodiment of the invention, the system provides a leak detection sensor located within the union, and in an embodiment of the invention the detection sensor is located beyond a back-up seal system. In an embodiment of the invention, the sensor and processing electronics are integral to the union housing. In yet another embodiment of the invention, the detection sensor is substantially symmetrically configured to detect leakage into a protected area regardless of orientation of the union. In an embodiment of the invention, the fluid being conveyed is electrically conductive and the detection sensor comprises an electrical conductivity sensor.

A hose fault detection system includes a hose assembly and a fault detector. The hose assembly includes a first conductive layer, second conductive layer, and an intermediate layer that is disposed between the first and second conductive layers. Each of the first and second conductive layers has an electrical characteristic. The fault detector is configured for detecting an electrical change based on the electrical characteristic to signify a potential impending failure of at least one of the first and second conductive layers of the hose. The fault detector includes a sensing device, a recording device and a digital processor. The sensing device is in electrical communication with the first and second conductive layers to measure the electrical characteristic. The recording device is configured for storing the measured electrical characteristic.

A leak detector sleeve allows performing leak detection at a flanged joint. The leak detector sleeve is made of elastomeric material that allows achieving a gas-tight seal when the leak detector sleeve encircles a flanged joint. The leak detector sleeve includes a hole that communicates with a gap in the flanged joint, thereby allowing the tip of a sniffer probe to be placed in or near the hole to detect whether the flanged joint is leaking. The leak detector sleeve is made of material that will withstand the operating temperature of the flanged joint without becoming hardened or brittle. A method for detecting a leak using the leak detector sleeve allows for efficiently and conveniently detecting leaks. In addition, the sleeve may be easily used and reused without the adverse effects or intensive manual labor required in the prior art.

A test fitting for installation in a plumbing system comprises an annular sleeve having opposed first and second open ends and an inner surface that defines an open interior space and a hole. A cord has a first portion removably positioned in the sleeve's interior space and a second portion extending through the hole for removing the cord from the interior space through the hole. The first portion of the cord forms a watertight spiral disc that extends across the interior space to define a first area completely separated from a second area, and an outer edge of the spiral disc may be supported by a ledge extending from the inner surface into the interior space. Means are included for selectively sealing the hole after the cord is withdrawn through the hole, such as a plug complementary to the hole.

Valves for annular conduits and associated systems and methods are disclosed. A fluid transmission system in accordance with one embodiment of the invention includes a first conduit having a first wall aligned with a flow direction in the first conduit and a second conduit disposed annularly around the first conduit with a second wall aligned with the flow direction. An access channel can be positioned to have an aperture in fluid communication with the first conduit and can be isolated from fluid communication with the second conduit. A valve element can be positioned in fluid communication with the access channel and can be movable between a first position and a second position, with the valve element being positioned to allow a first amount of flow through the access channel when in the first position and being positioned to allow no flow or a second amount of flow less than the first amount of flow through the access channel when in the second position. The valve can be installed in aircraft fuel lines or other systems.

In a pipeline system having a plurality of pipe segments joining a fluid supply tank to a fluid dispenser, the invention includes a pipe coupling assembly for use on at least one terminal end of a fluid transfer pipe, where the transfer pipe has an inner tubular member for transferring fluid and an outer tubular member and an interstitial space there between. The coupling assembly comprises a transition coupling for attachment to the pipe segment to provide a first path for the fluid in the inner tubular member and a second path for the interstitial space. The coupling assembly further comprises a transition tube assembly for attachment to the transition coupling to provide separate paths for the transfer fluid and the interstitial space, where the interstitial space provides a means for performing leak detection or fitting integrity tests during application of either a vacuum condition or pressurized gas input via such selective access.
