Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described for phase error estimation and correction with sub-symbol resolution. A transmitting device may precode symbols (e.g., phase tracking reference signal (PT-RS) symbols) using a discrete Fourier transform (DFT). The transmitting device may map the DFT-precoded symbols to sets of adjacent subcarriers of a wireless signal, and may map other symbols to other subcarriers of the wireless signal. A receiving device may receive the wireless signal and may compare time domain representations of the DFT-precoded symbols with time domain representations of known reference symbols. The receiving device may estimate a phase error with sub-symbol resolution in the time domain based at least in part on the comparison, and may apply a phase correction in either the time or frequency domain to the other symbols.

Abstract: Wireless communication techniques that include beam training performed to aid mobile devices in identifying beams for use in communications (e.g., uplink communications) are discussed. A mobile device may transmit to a base station an indication of a level of beamforming reciprocity of the mobile device. A base station/gNB may transmit an indication of one or more transmission beams to be used by the mobile device for uplink wireless communication based on the level of beamforming reciprocity. The one or more transmission beams to be used by the mobile device for uplink communication may include a reciprocal transmission beam. A mobile device not capable of full beamforming reciprocity may determine a transmission beam through uplink beam training. A mobile device may transmit to a base station information using at least one of the one or more transmission beams. Other aspects and features are also claimed and discussed.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. The method may include transmitting a first synchronization signal in a set of beam directions during a first symbol period of a synchronization subframe and transmitting a second synchronization signal in another set of beam directions during a second symbol period of the synchronization subframe. The second set of beam directions may be spatially interleaved with the first set of beam directions. Additionally, the method may include monitoring a first and second set of beam directions during a first and second symbol period of a random access subframe, respectively. Additionally, the method may include receiving, from a base station, first and second synchronization signals in a synchronization subframe, decoding the first synchronization signal, and transmitting an access request based at least in part on the decoded first synchronization signal.

An exemplary method generally includes transmitting, on a narrowband region within a wider system bandwidth, a directional primary synchronization signal (DPSS), receiving feedback information from one or more user equipments (UEs) based on the DPSS, wherein the feedback information comprises an indication of a bandwidth capability of a UE that transmitted the feedback information, and allocating resources to the one or more UEs within at least one of the wider system bandwidth or the narrowband region based, at least in part, on the feedback information.

A user equipment (UE) may identify a first set of transmit beams and an associated first set of receive beams having a channel characteristic that is below a first threshold. The UE may identify, for each receive beam in the first set of receive beams, a transmit beam in a second set of transmit beams having a channel characteristic above a second threshold. The UE may identify a relative channel characteristic value between each transmit beam in the first set of transmit beams and each transmit beam in the second set of transmit beams. The UE may transmit a message that identifies the beams in the first and second set of transmit beams, the identified receive beam from the first set of receive beams for each beam in the first set of transmit beams, and the relative channel characteristic value.

Abstract: DM-RS symbols may be inserted in the beginning of a subframe, or in two parts of the subframe. In one aspect, a method, a computer-readable medium, and an apparatus for dynamically conveying DM-RS information are provided. The apparatus may be a base station. The apparatus may determine the number of DM-RS symbols and/or the locations within a subframe for transmission of the DM-RS symbols. The apparatus may transmit the number of the DM-RS symbols and/or the locations within the subframe for transmission of the DM-RS symbols to a UE. In another aspect, a UE may receive the number of DM-RS symbols and/or the locations within a subframe for transmission of the DM-RS symbols from a base station. The UE may decode the DM-RS symbols from the subframe based on the number of the DM-RS symbols and/or the locations within a subframe for transmission of the DM-RS symbols.

Abstract: Described herein are methods, systems, and apparatus for jointly estimating channel and phase noise in a control symbol. In one example, a method for wireless communication is described that includes inserting a control tone at a first periodicity in a first subcarrier of a control symbol and inserting a pilot tone at a second periodicity in a second subcarrier of the control symbol, the pilot tone being offset from the control tone in the control symbol. The method also includes transmitting the control symbol. In another example, a method for wireless communication is described that includes receiving a control symbol comprising a control tone at a first periodicity, and a pilot tone at a second periodicity, the pilot tone being offset from the control tone in the control symbol. The method also includes performing a phase noise estimation and a channel estimation from the pilot tone.
