Abstract: An example device for coding video data codes, in a parameter set, a first syntax element indicative of a luma coding tree block size of coding tree units (CTUs) to which the parameter set is applicable minus 5. The device codes, in the parameter set, a second syntax element indicative of a minimum luma coding block size minus 2 of luma coding blocks to which the parameter set is applicable, wherein a value of the second syntax element is in a range of 0 to a value based on the first syntax element, inclusive. The device codes the luma coding blocks to which the parameter set is applicable in accordance with the first syntax element and the second syntax element in the parameter set.

Abstract: An example device includes a memory configured to store video data and one or more processors implemented in circuitry and communicatively coupled to the memory. The one or more processors are configured to determine whether a maximum number of merge candidates for a slice of the video data is equal to a first value. The one or more processors are configured to infer a value of a first syntax element to be equal to a second value based at least in part on the maximum number of merge candidates for the slice being equal to the first value, the first syntax element being indicative of a maximum number of merge candidates and a maximum number of merge candidates of a non-rectangular coding mode. The one or more processors are also configured to decode the slice based on the maximum number of merge candidates and the first syntax element.

Abstract: The disclosure provides a system and methods for encoding video data. The method can include storing a data structure in a memory, the data structure having a first plurality of data elements arranged corresponding to a second plurality of data elements of a first video data block, and defining a periphery, the data structure further including data related to all of a smallest prediction unit (PU) for the first video data block. The method can also include increasing a size of the data structure in the memory by adding a plurality of extended units along the periphery of the first plurality of data elements, each extended unit having data related to a smallest data element of the first video data block, the extended units being set to default values. The method can also comprise encoding the first video data block based on the data structure.

Encoding the future picture in this manner may result in encoding performance improvements with minimal increases in encoding and decoding complexity.

Abstract: A video coder can determine a first most probable intra prediction mode and a second most probable intra prediction mode for a current video block, and based on the first and second most probable intra prediction modes, determine an estimate of an actual intra prediction mode used to code the current video block. The estimate of the actual intra prediction mode can be determined by selecting one of the first most probable mode and the second most probable mode as the estimate of the actual intra prediction in response to both the first most probable mode and the second most probable mode being different angular prediction modes. The estimate of the actual intra prediction mode plus difference information can be used to identify the actual intra prediction mode used to code the current video block.
