A top-operated, outside unloading device for a bottom discharge railway tank car is disclosed. The tank car has an outlet valve in its bottom which is opened and closed by an operating rod connected to the valve and which extends up through the interior of the tank car. The operating rod projects out through the top of the tank car and is rotated by means of a hand wheel. The upper end of the operating rod is sealed with respect to the tank car by compressible packing seals carried by a packing body surrounding the upper end of the operating rod. The packing body has a part-spherical lower end which mates with a seat surrounding the opening in the top of the tank car through which the operating rod extends. The packing body may universally, angularly (or swivel) move with respect to the seat within a cone of movement so that any misalignment (within a limited range) of the operating rod from the valve at the bottom of the car to the top opening may be accommodated, and so that the packing seals within the packing body may be concentrically aligned with the operating rod thereby to assure proper sealing of the rod to the packing body. After alignment of the packing body with respect to the operating rod, the packing body is sealably secured (preferably welded) to the tank car. A method of aligning and sealing the operating rod relative to the tank car is also disclosed.

In accordance with the present invention, a hand brake assembly (300) is mounted adjacent one end of a first car or articulated unit (303). A force dividing assembly (306) is provided on the first car, which divides the applied hand brake into a first (313) and second (321) hand brake linkages. The first hand brake linkage (313) is connected to a first air brake linkage (315) located on the first car. Preferably a portion of the first air brake linkage is located within an air brake cylinder (318). When the hand brake is applied, the first hand brake linkage (313) is effective to apply the brakes on the first car or unit through the first air brake linkage. The second hand brake linkage (321) extends from one car or unit to a second adjacent car or unit (333). A force multiplying assembly (324) is provided on the second car or unit which increases the hand brake force of the second hand brake linkage to a level sufficient to apply the brakes on the second car or unit through a second air brake linkage (336) located on the second car or unit. A second force dividing assembly (340) is located on the second car and another hand brake linkage (353) is connected thereto extend to a third car or unit 363 to apply the hand brake force on the third car or unit.

A ball valve structure (10) having a valve seat assembly (46) positioned in annular seat pockets located in a flow passage (14) on opposed sides of a ball valve member (18). Each valve seat assembly is mounted for limited longitudinal movement toward and away from the adjacent ball valve member (18) and spring means (54) are placed within the seat pockets behind the valve seat assemblies to urge the assemblies toward and into intimate contact with the ball valve member. The valve seat assembly includes inner and outer annular concentric seat rings (48, 50) with a resilient sealing ring (52) secured therebetween. The inner annular seat ring has a flared end (64) which fits inside the outer seat ring and energizes or deforms the sealing ring (52) held therebetween, thereby, securely retaining the sealing ring between the seat rings and preventing the introduction of line pressure behind the sealing ring to possibly extrude the sealing ring from its position within the seat rings. The co-acting seat rings deform the sealing ring such as to provide a protruded annular sealing portion (96) which extends beyond the end boundaries of the sealing ring facing the ball valve member so that upon intimate contact with the ball valve member the protruded sealing portion (96) provides a high pressure sealing element to prevent pressurized fluid from escaping from the flow passage of the ball valve structure.

In accordance with the present invention a handhold (10) is provided including a base handhold member (12) including a first fastening flange portion (16) and a longitudinally extending rod portion (14). The length of the longitudinal portion is sufficient to meet most if not all distances between fasteners utilized on railway cars and other transportation vehicles. A second handhold member (30) includes a base portion (32) having an opening 34 and an upwardly extending flange portion (40). The base portion slidingly receives the rod portion and thus enables adjustment of the distance between the flange portions. The rod portion thus may be cut at the installation site to meet desired length. In one embodiment the distance D.sub.2 of the second flange above or below the rod may be varied by utilizing a selected member having this desired distance. Also different second members may have selected distances D.sub.1 from the vehicle body. The second member is held in place by mechanically deforming the cut end of the rod portion to prevent exit of the second member.

Apparatus (1) for controllably opening the choke valve (V) of a carburetor (C). An actuator (3) is supplied signal elements of an electrical command signal. The actuator is responsive to the command signal elements to move a choke shaft (S) and open the choke valve. A spring (13) is connected to the actuator and the choke shaft to exert a choke valve opening force on the choke shaft when command signal elements are supplied to the actuator. A sensor (21) senses the temperature of the engine and generates an electrical signal representative thereof. A processor (23) processes the electrical signal from the sensor and generates and supplies signal elements of the electrical command signal to the actuator if the engine temperature represented by the electrical signal is less than a predetermined engine temperature. The choke valve is fully opened when engine temperature reaches the predetermined temperature.

To provide a railway tank car mounting flange which does not extend more than one (1) inch below the tank bottom, fixed stops to prevent rotation of the valve closure during movement between open and closed positions, and fixed stops which determine the amount of travel of the valve closure between open and closed positions are located within the tank. The valve closure is provided with outwardly extending stops which engage the fixed stops within the tank. Preferably the fixed stops extend inwardly and upwardly from the mounting flange. Preferably the valve closure is bench assembled onto a removable valve seat and is installed into the tank from the bottom, avoiding the need for a workman to be located within the tank during installation.

A mechanism (38) for applying a brake force produced by operation of a hand brake (HB) includes a force splitter (40) interconnected with the hand brake and one set (B1) of wheels to transmit the brake force to this set of brakes. A first torque unit (54) is interconnected with the force splitter to transfer the brake force from one end of the car to the other. A second torque unit (74) is interconnected with the first torque unit and the other set (B2) of brakes to transmit the brake force to this other set of brakes. Application of both sets of brakes in response to operation of the hand brake prevents movement of the car.

A pressure energizable sealing connection for establishing a bore seal between first and second coaxially aligned and connected members (22, 10) having opposed internal recesses forming seat pockets at their adjoining ends. The invention comprises a sealing ring (40) having annular end surfaces (56, 54) and an internal diameter which corresponds to the bores of the coaxially aligned members (22, 10), the connection of which is to be sealed. The ring (40) is provided with a pair of circumferential projections (67, 68) separated by a groove (69) therebetween and each having an external surface of arcuate configuration. At their adjoining ends (25, 26) the opposed seat pockets of the adjoining members (22, 10) provide annular cylindrical walls (41, 42) for sealing engagement with the annular projections (67, 68) of the sealing ring (40). The external diameter of the ring (40) is slightly larger than the diameters of the seat pockets so that the resulting interference fit between the ring (40) and the cylindrical walls (41, 42) of the seat pockets provides an initial seal between the projections of the ring (40) and the coaxially connected members (22, 10). The axial dimension of the ring equals the sum of the axial dimensions of the seat pockets so there is no axial compression of the ring by the connected members (22, 10). Fluid pressurization of the coaxially adjoined members results in pressure energization of the sealing ring so that any increase in pressure internally of the connected members results in a greater radial compression of the sealing ring and correspondingly greater sealing forces.
