The present invention provides an improved block copolymer composition for extruding films having excellent stress relaxation and increased retained tension or load at elevated temperatures, as well as a film cast from this composition. The composition is comprised of (a) 100 parts by weight of a mixture of two or more hydrogenated styrenic block copolymers (HSBC's) having at least two polystyrene end-blocks and a mid-block of a polymerized diene wherein at least 80 mol % of the residual unsaturation has been hydrogenated, wherein HSBC #1 has an apparent number average molecular weight between 35,000 and 90,000 and a polystyrene content between 15 and 40 percent by weight, wherein HSBC #2 has an apparent number average molecular weight between 95,000 and 150,000 and a polystyrene content between 15 and 40 percent by weight, wherein the ration w/w of HSBC #1 versus HSBC #2 is in the range of from 8:1 to 1:8, (b) from 10 to 50 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of polymer (phr) of a a medium molecular weight polystyrene (2) or a mixture of a low molecular weight polystyrene (1) and a medium molecular weight polystyrene (2), wherein PS (1) has a molecular weight in the range of 500 to 4,000 and PS(2) has a molecular weight in the range of 20,000 to 150,000 and wherein PS(1) and PS(2) are used in a weight ratio of 1:5 to 5:1, (c) from 3 to 50 phr of a filler, and (d) from 30 to 70 phr of a softening agent.

The invention relates to a selectively hydrogenated isoprene-styrene diblock copolymer having a polystyrene content of at least 40 wt. %, which when added to an oil-based mud composition, substantially reduces fluid loss. The polystyrene in the diblock has a true molecular weight greater than 60 kg/mole and the total apparent molecular weight of the diblock copolymer is at least 160 kg/mole. The drilling mud that contains about 0.5 pounds per barrel to about 10 pounds per barrel of a selectively hydrogenated isoprene-styrene diblock copolymer and a weighting agent, resulting in a drilling fluid composition exhibiting good suspension of the weighting agent and improved fluid loss performance.

Bicomponent fibers comprising a thermoplastic polymer and an elastomeric compound are made which can be continuously extruded from the melt at high production rates. The elastomeric compound has high flow and consists essentially of a selectively hydrogenated block copolymer and a tackifier resin, an alpha-olefin copolymer, an alpha-olefin terpolymer, a wax or mixtures thereof. In one embodiment the block copolymer has at least one polystyrene block of molecular weight from 5,000 to 7,000 and at least one polydiene block of molecular weight from 20,000 to 70,000 and having a vinyl content of greater than 60 mol %. In a second embodiment the block copolymer has a vinyl content of less than 60 mol %. The bicomponent fibers are useful for the manufacture of articles such as woven fabrics, spun bond non-woven fabrics or filters, staple fibers, yarns and bonded, carded webs.

Disclosed is a method for making selectively hydrogenated block copolymers of vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons and conjugated dienes comprising: a) anionically polymerizing vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons and conjugated dienes to produce block copolymers with living chain ends; b) terminating the living chain ends; to produce a terminated block copolymer, with a member from the group consisting of an alcohol, hydrogen, and mixtures thereof, to prepare a terminated block copolymer; and c) contacting the terminated block copolymers with hydrogen at a temperature of from 20 to 175° C. in the presence of a catalyst prepared by combining a cobalt carboxylate with an aluminum alkyl, wherein: (i) if the polymer is terminated with an alcohol and the alcohol is a linear alcohol, the linear alcohol is used to terminate the living chain ends in an amount such that the alcohol:living chain end molar ratio is from 0.05 to 1.2: (ii) if the polymer is terminated with an alcohol and the alcohol is a branched alcohol, the branched alcohol is used to terminate the living chain ends in an amount such that the alcohol:living chain end molar ration is from 0.05 to about 3.0: an (iii) if the polymer is terminated with an alcohol and the alcohol is a mixture of a linear alcohol and a branched alcohol, the linear alcohol is used to terminate the living chain ends in an amount such that the linear alcohol:living chain end molar ration is from 0.05 to 1.2.
