A theft deterrent device has a body portion and an attachment portion. The attachment portion has an upper jaw and a lower jaw. The upper jaw is spaced from the lower jaw so as to define a mouth in which a portion of an article can be inserted. A pin is movably mounted in the upper jaw, at least between a retracted position in which the pin does not substantially extend into the mouth, and an extended position in which the pin extends through the mouth and into the lower jaw. Releasable locking structure is provided to secure the pin in the extended position. The device can be used in combination with electronic article surveillance technology to secure articles against theft, with reduced damage to the articles and with reduced risk to persons handling the tags. A detachment device for use with a theft deterrent device is also disclosed.

A device for deterring theft of a protected article, including a pin and clutch for attaching the device to the article, with the pin and clutch being embodied in two components that are adapted to be locked together on opposite sides of a portion of the protected article to prevent unauthorized removal of the device from the article. The pin has a head that is anchored within one component; and the clutch in the other component grasps the pin to provide a predetermined retaining force for resisting separation of the components by prying or pulling the components apart. The one component includes three fragile elongated vials that fracture when at least a predetermined pressure is applied thereto, with each vial containing a detrimental substance that would damage the article if the vial were to be fractured while the device was attached to the article; and the one component defines a head space for enabling limited axial movement of the pinhead and three guide channels respectively containing three balls between the pinhead and the vials. Flexible cradles shield the vials from contact with the balls during a relaxed state, but yield to enable the balls to contact the vials when the balls are moved in response to the pinhead being moved in response to application to the two components of at least said predetermined threshold separation force.

A system for deterring theft is made up of a clamp for attaching to a small item of merchandise such as a wallet, check book wallet or pocketbook and a spreading tool for attaching the clamp to and removing it from the item. The clamp is a generally U-shaped clamp having two clamping arms with a relatively strong biasing force between them. Padding is provided on the inside surfaces of the clamping arms. At least one of the clamping arms is provided with teeth which, when the clamp is attached to the item, will cut into the surface of the item if an attempt is made to slide the clamp relative to the item. The spreading tool opens the clamping arms against the biasing force to allow the clamp to be attached to or removed from the item. The preferred tool has biasing springs which tend to keep the jaws in a nearly closed equilibrim position. In a second embodiment a sliding retainer keeps the clamp in place relative to the spreading tool while the clamp is being attached to the item. Flanges are also provided on the jaws of the spreading tool to hold the clamp in place. A method of deterring theft of an item of merchandise such as a wallet includes the steps of clamping a clamp to the item such that a billfold, credit card slot or check book slot is closed off by the clamp.

A clamp for use as a theft deterrent device includes a U-shaped member having first and second legs, with each leg including a shelf disposed on the inside edge of the member and extending laterally toward the opposite leg; a housing defining a pair of longitudinal channels for receiving the legs of the U-shaped member and a slot extending between the longitudinal channels; a pair of overlapping plates disposed for separate movement within the slot into and away from different ones of the longitudinal channels, with each plate including a row of teeth disposed on a longitudinal edge of the one plate that moves into one channel for engaging the shelf on one leg of the U-shaped member received by said one channel to prevent removal of the one leg from the channel. A positioning member is disposed within the housing for forcing one plate to move into one channel and the other plate to move into the other channel such that the teeth of the plates respectively engage the shelves of the legs of the U-shaped member received in the longitudinal channels to prevent removal of the U-shaped member from the housing. The positioning member includes a magnetically attractive element that is movable from a first position to a second position within the housing when attracted by a magnetic field applied in a predetermined direction such that when the magnetically attractive element moves to its second position, the plates are forced to move away from the longitudinal channels sufficiently to disengage the teeth from the shelves so that the U-shaped member can be removed from the housing.
