摘要： A digital answering machine, electronic voice mail system, or any other voice messaging system integrating both non-speech data such as caller ID information or graphical or pictorial images together with associated speech data in common memory such that only one message table is necessary. The integrated common memory is divided into sectors, and each sector is divided into pages which each contain both speech and non-speech data. A single message table is associated with each corresponding set of speech and non-speech data, and includes an offset value indicating the beginning address of the speech data stored just above its associated non-speech data in the first linked page. The offset value is variable to provide an elastic non-speech data buffer to accommodate variable length non-speech data such as would be required by the various caller ID standards throughout the world.

User selected media for play-out might be locally generated at the user's handset, or provided through a separate connection established between the wireless handset and the network.

摘要： A cordless telephone according to one embodiment of the invention includes a base unit and a handset, wherein the handset includes a keypad, a key scan element adapted to scan the keypad for a predetermined key sequence, and a controller adapted to cause the initiation of an outgoing call based on a determination of the predetermined key sequence. In one embodiment, the predetermined key sequence is 9-1-1. In an alternative embodiment according to the invention, a method of placing a telephone call from a cordless telephone handset that is in an on-hook condition includes the steps of sensing the activation of a predetermined key sequence, and initiating a telephone call based on the sensed activation. The telephone call may be to a telephone number corresponding to the predetermined key sequence, such as 9-1-1.

In a particular example, a telephone or Caller ID device includes a memory adapted to store Caller ID data associated with an incoming call, and a processor adapted to affect storage of the Caller ID data based on a status of the incoming call, such as whether the incoming call is answered. In an alternative embodiment, a method of receiving an incoming telephone call includes the steps of receiving Caller ID data associated with the incoming telephone call, evaluating a status of the incoming telephone call, and making a Caller ID storage decision based on the status of the incoming telephone call. The decision may be based on handling of the incoming telephone call, such as whether the incoming telephone call is answered, or whether it is answered by a person. The decision may be made proximate in time to the receipt of the incoming telephone call, or in response to a circumstance, such as in response to receipt of an indication that the memory is more full than a threshold, or in response to user input. For example, the decision may be made in conjunction with other storage decisions regarding other Caller ID data in response to the circumstance.

摘要： Cordless telephone technology provides a long range and highly sophisticated wireless extension between a plurality of wireless piconet networks. In one embodiment, base units of separate cordless telephones include respective piconet front ends (e.g., Bluetooth protocol bearing RF front ends) in addition to the otherwise conventional RF front end. The piconet-capable base units are placed and made members of separate piconet networks, but within conventional cordless telephone range of one another, e.g., within one mile of one another. To allow communications between piconet devices on the separate wireless piconet networks, the cordless telephone base units pass piconet content information (i.e., the messages passed by a piconet device on a first piconet network including a first cordless telephone base unit intended for receipt by another piconet device on a second piconet network serviced by the other cordless telephone base unit. In another embodiment, a base unit of a cordless telephone is made a member of a first wireless piconet network while its remote handset is made a member of a second wireless base unit, and piconet content information is passed from a device on one wireless piconet network to another device on the other wireless piconet network over the wireless cordless telephone (e.g., 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz range) channel established between the cordless telephone base unit and its remote handset.

摘要： An on-hook EOH indicating telephone includes a parallel set detector, an EOH signal detector, and an indication module to activate a configurable audible and/or visual alert indicating that another telephone is off-hook and should be hung up. The audible alert may be a unique ringing of the otherwise conventional ringer (e.g., every 5 minutes, at a unique cadence or frequency, etc.), or may be an audible tone output from the speaker of the on-hook EOH indicating telephone. The visible alert may be, e.g., a text message on a display of the on-hook EOH indicating telephone, a blinking, flashing, etc. of an LED, or other visible attention getting technique. When the central office presents the extended off-hook (EOH) notification signal to the desired telephone line, the invention-equipped telephone detects a parallel set in use, and then listens for the EOH signal. Upon receiving the EOH signal, the inventionequipped telephone will uniquely ring, visibly illuminate, flash, or otherwise alert the users in the household that another telephone is off-hook. This audible and/or visible alert at the on-hook EOH indicating telephone is over and above that audibly output by the parallel telephone which caused the receipt of the EOH signal.

摘要： An adjunct Type II caller ID/call waiting (CIDCW) receiver unit is provided which has a greatly improved ability to detect tones and other call related information on a telephone line from a central office while the customer premises equipment is in an off-hook condition. The inventive adjunct CIDCW receiver unit is placed in series between the telephone line from the central office and the customer premises equipment, rather than in parallel with the customer premises equipment as in conventional adjunct CIDCW receiver units. A second telephone line interface (TLI) is included in the adjunct CIDCW receiver unit for connection to the customer premises unit to simulate the impedance of the telephone line. The adjunct CIDCW receiver unit has the ability to disconnect, mute or suppress the microphone signal from the customer premises equipment from being included in the signal received by the call related information receiver portion of the adjunct CIDCW receiver unit.
