From curable mixtures containing polyglycidyl compounds according to the invention and a curing agent such as hexahydrophthalic anhydride or phthalic anhydride are obtained products with good mechanical and electrical properties.

These compounds are manufactured by reacting dihydrouracils substituted in the 3-position by a halogenalkyl group with a trialkyl phosphite. The compounds are useful as flame retardants which may be incorporated into polymeric materials or their starting substances.

The polyesters are thermoplastic materials from which moulded materials having valuable thermo-mechanical properties can be manufactured by the customary shaping processes, such as casting, injection moulding and extrusion. Unsaturated, linear polyesters having flame-retarding properties are obtained by polycondensing unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, optionally mixed with aromatic dicarboxylic acids and aliphatic diols, with brominated and/or chlorinated 1,3-di-(hydroxyalkyl)-benzimidazolone compounds. The new, unsaturated polyesters can be polymerized easily, also when mixed with other polymerizable monomers, and give moulding materials having flame-retarding properties.

The flame-resistant agent is added to the polymer at any suitable stage of production by a simple mixing together of the constituents, whereby this flame-resistant agent must not react chemically with the polymer.

The dicarboxylic acid compounds have a high stability to heat and therefore are very suited for the manufacture of polycondensates by the melt condensation process.

New linear copolyesters containing amide groups are obtained by polycondensing certain dicarboxylic acid diamides which are obtained by reaction of 1 mol of an aromatic, cycloaliphatic or cycloaliphatic-aliphatic diamine with 2 mols of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid or their polyester-forming derivatives, together with terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid or their polyester-forming derivatives and with alkanediols to a relative viscosity greater than 1.2. The new copolyesters containing amide groups are valuable engineering thermoplastic materials which are easily processible and give moulding materials with good thermo-mechanical properties.
